I am not sure what happened to his parents, but he and his brother were living with their Uncle Thomas Tait Jr. in 1880.

Here is something I forgot to add, more for amusement than anything else, although I think is is probably referring to Thoms Tait Jr., based on the time period. If it was him, the guy he beat with a brick must have pulled through.
On Friday night last Thomas Tait, who resides about five miles from the village of Reedsburg, while under the influence of liquor got into an altercation with a young man from southern Minnesota by the name of Commody, and struck him with a brick from the effects of which he cannot recover. Tait is under arrest.
