She was born 30 Jun 1896, in Tomah, Wisconsin. She married Earl Benjamin Scott and moved to Eau Claire Co., Wisconsin. Earl was born 16 May 1891 and lived in Augusta.

A quiet wedding took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M.L. Hineman of the town of Tomah on Thursday, Sept. 24th, when their youngest daughter Amy was united in marriage to Mr. Earl Scott of Augusta. The ceremony was performed at noon by Rev. Jonathan G. Smith of the Congregational church. Only the immediate relatives of the contracting parties were present. A wedding dinner was served and the newly wedded couple took the afternoon train for La Crosse. They intended to go from there to Milwaukee but were called back next day by the death of a nephew of the bride. They left Tuesday for Augusta where they will make their home, Mr. Scott being engaged in the moving picture business there. We join with the bride’s many friends in wishing them happiness and prosperity.

NOTE: The nephew mentioned was Virgil Frederick Hineman, son of Ralph W. Hineman, Amy’s brother. He died from TB, as did the wife (Bessie Martin, died Aug 1914) of Amy’s oldest brother, Gardie.

AUGUSTA : Robert Scott, 86, of E19110 County Road N, Augusta, passed away at his home Wednesday morning, May 30, 2007.

Robert Miles Scott, son of Earl and Amy (Hineman) Scott, was born January 16, 1921, in Scott?s Valley, rural Augusta. At the age of 2, he moved into the city of Augusta, where he attended grade school and graduated from Augusta High School. He was united in marriage to Loradean “Eny” Harke on February 7, 1940, in Cresco, Iowa. The couple lived all their married life in Augusta. During WW II, Bob served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific Theatre, stationed mainly in China. Bob had been employed in Eau Claire by Dolly Madison Dairies and Gillette Tire Company before taking a job with Northern States Power Company in 1950. During his 32 years of employment with NSP, he worked as a ground man, lineman and eventually as the district manager in the Augusta office. Since February of 2006, he had enjoyed making his home with his son and daughter-in-law in Ludington Township, rural Augusta.

Bob took pride in his community, and throughout his life volunteered his time for the betterment of Augusta. For many years he had been a member of the Augusta-Bridge Creek Fire Dept., where he had served as secretary-treasurer. In the 1960s, during the construction years of the elementary school, he had served on the Augusta School Board. He also served on the Augusta Nursing Home Building Committee and eventually on the Nursing Home Board. Since 1950, he was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Augusta, where he served in various capacities. He served on the Augusta Cemetery Board, and was an active member and officer with the Augusta Lions Club, American Legion, and past commander of the Augusta VFW Post. He was a member of the Eau Claire County Conservation League, and during this time was instrumental in establishing the Eau Claire County Public Hunting Grounds and Coon Fork Lake. While working for NSP, he became a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union, and in 1970 was awarded the Citizen of the Year for NSP.

Bob enjoyed the time he spent coaching girls softball teams and being involved with his children and grandchildren?s activities. He was an avid deer hunter, and looked forward to the annual family hunts. He also enjoyed fishing, playing cards, pool and bowling.

He is survived by his son, William and Kathryn Scott; daughter-in-law, Lynda Scott; brother, Allen and Elaine Scott; and sister, Rose and Don Grams, all of Augusta; four grandchildren, Jon Scott, Michelle (Don) Wade, all of Kenosha, David (Lisa) Scott of Omro and Richard (Kristine) Scott of Sherwood; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eny, on October 26, 1990; son, Larry Scott, on December 9, 2003; and siblings, Elizabeth Campbell, June Cain, Kathryn Hanson, Richard Scott and infant brother, John Scott.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2007, at Grace Lutheran Church in Augusta. Burial, with military rites conducted by the Augusta VFW and American Legion, will be held in the East Lawn Cemetery, Augusta.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta, and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to the Augusta VFW Post, Augusta Lions Club or Augusta Cemetery Association.

I would love to hear from any descendants of Earl Scott and Amy Hineman, and am hoping they might be able to provide more information and/or pictures, especially of the Hineman family. Amy’s brother Gardie, was my great-grandfather, and I don’t have any pictures of him or his first wife, Olive Bessie Martin.

Amy had a sister, Pearl, who lived in Augusta as well. Pearl was married to Ralph W. Bowen, and from what I can tell, they never had any children of their own. However, according to one census record, my grandfather, Nathan Hineman was living with them shortly after his mother died from TB.

Any info would be appreciated!

PROBABLY NOT RELATED: although of Scotch-Irish ancestry:

I stumbled across this first obituary and decided to do a little research because I knew we had a Laura Maud (Margaret) Hineman married to an Edwin Rankin in our HINEMAN tree. This is NOT that same couple, but I am wondering if they might be related to our Hineman family somehow.

UPDATE #3: There is a family tree on ancestry that lists parents of William B. Hindman as James Hindman and Clementina Messenkop, and lists Mary E. McMahon as William’s wife. It also gives William’s year of death as 1922, NJ.

I had run across the Clementina Hindman/Hineman when searching other Hineman lines, but so far, haven’t found a connection. These are Lancaster Co., PA Hindmans.

Mrs. Fallstick was born at Philadelphia on April 21, 1898, the daughter of Edward and Martha HINEMAN RANKIN. She was married Oct. 20, 1915, to Elmer FALLSTICK, who survives. A resident of Macy 18 years, she had moved there from Berlin, N.J. Mrs. Fallstick was a member of the Macy Methodist church.

Gerald R. Hineman

Memorial services for Gerald R. Hineman, 82, of Douglas were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, with Father Tony Bullman officiating. Interment of cremains will be in the Douglas Park Cemetery.

Mr. Hineman died Feb. 10, 1990, at Michael Manor in Douglas after a long illness. He was born Jan. 29, 1908, at Tomah, Wis., the son of Ralph and Emma (Pingel) Hineman. He grew up and attended school in Wisconsin.

He moved from Wisconsin to Omaha, Neb., and in 1924 moved to Wyoming, where he homesteaded north of Douglas. He also worked in the coal mines in Converse County.

On Nov. 1, 1942, he was married to Tonette Hansen at Douglas. After their marriage he worked as a mechanic and ranch hand, and retired from Converse County Road and Bridge in 1973.

Mr. Hineman was a member of I.O.O.F. Lodge and Christ Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his wife, Tonette, of Douglas; four sons, Russell, Wesley and Dana Hineman, all of Douglas, and Allen Hineman of Lusk; one daughter, Laura Hineman of Grafton, Va.; one sister, Gertrude Curtman of Sunrise Beach, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Ward, six brothers and one sister.

Memorials to the Arthritis Foundation would be appreciated by the family, and may be sent in care of Converse Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box X, Douglas, Wyo. 82633.

Funeral services for Tonette Mae “Toni” Hineman were held Friday, May 26, 2000 at Christ Episcopal Church in Douglas, Wyo., with the Reverend Marion Canterbury officiating. Inurnment was in Douglas Park Cemetery.

Toni Hineman died Tuesday, May 23, 2000 at Michael Manor in Douglas.

She was born March 31, 1920 in Douglas, Wyo., the daughter of Gustav and Viola (Utley) Hansen. She was reared and educated in Douglas, graduating from Douglas High School. She worked at many jobs but mostly at the telephone company, drug store and Douglas Senior Citizens’ Center. She was married to Gerald Hineman on November 1, 1942 in Douglas. To this union, six children were born. Toni enjoyed playing cards. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.

Toni was preceded in death by her parents; husband Gerald on February 10, 1990; son Ward; brother Donovan, and sister Dorothy.

She is survived by four sons: Allen of Lusk; Russell, Wesley and Dana of Douglas; daughter Laura Balentine of Hampton, Va., seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearer will be Mary Fischer.

Two Are Killed In Road Mishaps (not Wesley)

Wyoming’s 1962 highway fatality toll climbed to 116 over the weekend with the deaths of a 78-year-old Sheridan woman and a 15-year-old Douglas boy. The toll was 123 on the same date one year ago. The latest victim was Mrs. Anna Hughes. The Wyoming Highway patrol said she was killed in a car-pedestrian accident just north of Sheridan’s business district on main street Sunday evening. James L. Frye was killed Saturday when a car in which he was riding rolled over him after going off State Highway 5? [50 or 58] at the edge of Douglas. Two other Douglas teen-agers were injured in the one-car accidents. They were Terry Jones, 15, the driver, and Wesley Hineman, 14. Jones had a broken ankle and Hineman suffered a broken arm, broken leg and possible internal injuries, the Wyoming Highway Patrol reported. The boys were headed into Douglas when the car went off the road and rolled. All three were tossed out, with the car striking Frye and Hineman.

Virgil Frederick, fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hineman, aged 5 yrs. 4 mos., died on Friday, Sept. 25. He had been ill for about six weeks with a tubercular trouble affecting the bones of one of his limbs and was taken to the Tomah hospital for treatment. His strength was unequal to the strain and after being in the hospital eight days he died there last Friday evening. Virgil Frederick Hineman, aged 5 years, 4 months and 27 days, and fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hineman, of the town of Tomah, died at the hospital here Friday night, Sept. 25th.

A little over a week ago he was taken to the hospital for an operation for tuberculosis of the bone. He had suffered constantly for seven weeks, and the disease finally affected the brain, causing death.

The cause of the disease was, probably a slight injury received while at play.

The funeral was held Monday at the home 4 miles south of the city, Rev. Glaeser officiating. Interment was made in the new addition to Oak Grove cemetery.

Thompson A. Hineman was the son (and youngest child) of Alexander Hineman and Amanda Jane Ewing.

Because he was born in 1881, Thompson does not appear on any census record with his parents, however they are listed on his death record.

Something I noticed on the 1880 census: There was a Thompson family living near the Alexander Hineman family. Not sure if there is ANY connection at this point, but something I will try to research further.

Okay, on to what I have found so far: Thompson seems to have been a bit of a delinquent. According to the 1900 census, he was an inmate in a reformatory.

** Ancestry is being funny and won’t load any census images right now, so I can’t check to see the name of the  facility/prison or whatever. I had looked at it before, but didn’t make a note of the name.

Aaron mentioned a possible census record for Jacob Hineman, (wife, Mary Bickerstaff) born about 1809, son of John Hineman Sr. and Mary Unknown. I had done some research on him and his family awhile back, but since he mentioned him, I thought I would take another look. I am posting what I have found so far.

I had an approximate death of abt. 1833 Scioto, Jackson Co., Ohio for him, but didn’t enter a source, so I think I must have gotten it from someone else’s tree info.

NOTE: I emailed a request to the Jackson County Ohio Genealogy Society for a look-up in the cemetery index. There is a surname “HINEMAH” listed, which might be a typo, since they mentioned there could be some spelling/transcription errors.

UPDATE: I got an email back regarding the Hinemah/Hineman burial and the only one listed in the index is for Joseph Hineman/Hinemah.

I looked in the cemetery books and the only Hineman (Hinemah) was a Joseph Hinemah buried at Cedar Cemetery in Scioto Twp., there are no dates listed.

I checked Civil War Soldiers on Ancestry, but the only Joseph HinDman listed for Ohio would have come from Columbiana County, OH, as most of those companies came from there for the 104th Regiment Ohio Infantry. Here is a HUGE piece of speculation: Alexander Hineman, nephew of Jacob Hineman, was married to Amanda Jane EWING. Her father was John Ewing from Pennsylvania, born about 1810/1814. Samuel Ewing was from Beaver County Pennsylvania, born about 1802/1803. Could John and Samuel be brothers or some other relation? I know, it’s a stretch, but not impossible, and also not easy to prove, given the time period.

By 1870, Samuel Ewing is no longer around (probably dead) and Joseph Hineman is also gone, and I haven’t been able to find him. Mary Ann Hineman (listed as a servant) is still living with her half sister, Nancy Ewing, who is now married to Samson Casbos Nye:

Mrs. Mary Ellen Morris, 64, wife of John Morris, died at her home, 2513 Seventeenth street, yesterday evening at 7:52 o’clock. Death came at the end of a three year illness, during which time she was confined to her bed as the result of a second stroke of paralysis.

Mrs. Morris was a member of Manley M.E. church, which congregation she joined soon after moving to this city from Jackson. She was born in Grahamsville, Jackson, county.

The family located in Portsmouth in 1900 [or 1906].

Surviving are the husband, two sons, Mallalieu and Stanley and three daughters, Mrs. C.H. Samson, Mrs. Ernest Park and Miss Lulu Morris, all of this city.

She also leaves her father, Samson Nye, 88 years old, of Jackson, three sisters, Mrs. Jane Bice [Price], Portsmouth, Mrs. May Shay [Hulda May] and Mrs. Alice McClure of Dayton and a brother John L. Nye of Jackson and five grandchildren.

Murder Victim Buried

JACKSON, July 12 — The funeral of Roy Nye Shay, 19, who was found murdered in Dayton Wednesday afternoon, was held Saturday from the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Nye. The lad was a motorcycle messenger for the Western Union Telegraph Company, and was found lying along the bank of the Miami river; the body, it is thought, having been rolled toward the river by his assailant, and caught in a wire fence near the water’s edge.

The lad is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Shay, of Dayton, and is survived by his parents, one brother, Herbert Shay, and a number of more distant relatives.

Believe Murderer Of Youth Passed Through This City

Detective Howell of the Dayton police department was in the city the first of the week investigating a report that Frank Mills, charged with the murder of Roy Shay, Dayton messenger boy, who was shot and killed along the river front in Dayton on the night of July 6th, had passed through Portsmouth on July 11th, and that he had separated from his “buddy” at one of the ferry landings here.

It has been discovered that Mills, riding the motorcycle which he took from the murdered lad, passed through the city, and that he did part with his comrade here on the night of July 11th. Further trace of him has not been found.

The murdered boy, Shay, was buried in Jackson, where his people at one time made their home and where relatives live. This murder startled Dayton and surrounding territory because of the apparent lack of motive and the brutality of the crime, Shay’s body being found along the Miami river bank, and his murderer gone with the motorcycle. The machine, a Harley Davidson, was much battered and worn out, and it was believed that Mills might have stopped here for repairs.

Chief Distel and the local police are still on the lookout for Mills, but believe that he has gone south.

Held For Murder

DAYTON, Nov. 29. — Denying that he killed Roy N. Shay, Western Union messenger boy on the night of July 6, last, Frank Mills, gave himself up to Deputy Sheriff Harry Thompson this morning. Two days ago the police recovered a motorcycle, covered with blood and belonging to Shay in Greenup co, Kentucky.

Mills says he has been in that section for several weeks.

DAYTON, March 29. — The weight of a bit of lead taken from the brain of Roy N. Shay, messenger boy murdered here July 6, may be the means of Frank Mills, 20, who’s defense started Monday, freeing himself from a first degree murder charge. The defense claims the weight of the lead is of a 22 calibre bullet and not of a 32 calibre, the size of the gun alleged by the state. The defense claims there was a 22 rifle at the Shay home and that on one occasion Joseph Able, a roomer, said “I did it and am going to the police and tell them all about it.”

Youth Found Guilty of Murder; Given Mercy

DAYTON, O., April 1. — After being out since 9 o’clock Thursday night, the jury in the case of Frank Mills 20, who has been on trial for the past two weeks in common pleas court on a charge of first degree murder for the killing last July of Roy N. Shay, 19, Western Union messenger boy, today at 6:20 a.m. returned a verdict of guilty in the first degree. Mercy was recommended.

Mills was jointly indicted for the murder with Fred Panstingle, now in the Mansfield reformatory. It was charged by the state, the two boys killed Shay in order to obtain his motorcycle to go to Lancaster, Ohio, boys’ industrial school to free Martin Wacher, a prisoner there, and a cousin of Panstingle.

Mills surrendered himself last December. His attorneys claimed that Panstingle alone killed Shay and then induced Mills to accompany him on the motorcycle, which was found in Mills’ possession when he surrendered.

This is indexed as Eldis McC  Hindman, but if you compare the last letter of his first name to other “s” on the same document, you can tell it is not an “s”. I think it is an “e” for Eddie, even though it does look different from the “e” at the end of Myrtle. In addition, Nancy too a look at it too, and noticed the “M” in McC looks like a “W” until you compare it to other ones on the page, plus it does look like the “M” in Myrtle.

BRADLEYTOWN — Mrs. Cassie Arters, 88, a resident here, widow of James Arters, died at 10:45 p.m. Sunday in the Sharp Convalescent Home, Pleasantville, following an extended illness.

She was born on July 20, 1874, in Bradleytown, and lived most of her life in that community.

Her children preceded her in death. Surviving are five grandchildren, James Smith, New Orleans; Dean Smith, Erie; Richard Smith, California; Twila Smith, Meadville, and Mrs. Marilyn Mehaelose?, Townville.

Removal was made in the Williams Funeral Home, Chapmanville.

For 1870, I couldn’t find her father, Robert Jennings, so I searched for Merton, who was old enough to show up on the census record.

And look who  he is living with!

And who is missing? Their daughter, Elizabeth, who was old enough to be married.

So…I am thinking that she was married to Robert Jennings and probably died in childbirth. Why else would this seemingly unrelated baby be living in this house?
