SAMUEL HINEMAN born about 1837-1838 Indiana

I have been trying to identify this Samuel Hineman for a long time because I really think he is related to my Hineman family. I renewed my search after receiving a picture of a Samuel Hineman from another researcher who has ties to the McConnell side of the family.

Tonight, I think I have found another reason to believe he is related. Looking through the Hineman siblings of my Samuel Hineman (not this  one, but could be his father) I noticed that Catherine Hineman (daughter of John Hineman, born about 1775 and Mary Unknown) who married David McConnell, had a son Phillip McConnell in  Wayne Co., Indiana in 1838!

****UPDATE: Aaron caught an error I made above. Phillip McConnell was born in Wayne County, Indiana, but none of us have Jackson as the exact place. Sorry about that; I have removed that mention.

Well, this Samuel Hineman born about 1837/38 was born in Indiana, same time frame. Now, evidently none of these people stayed in Indiana very long. In fact, David and Catherine went to Wisconsin, as did this Samuel Hineman and my John Hineman, probably all about the same time, possibly together!

I think this Samuel Hineman is a brother to my John Hineman, son of Samuel Hineman. Since the McConnell’s and Hineman’s are known to have migrated together, why wouldn’t it make sense that Catherine’s brother, Samuel went to Indiana with her and her family?

Now, here is someone else I found in Jackson, Wayne Co., Indiana, but in 1840:

Now back to Samuel Hineman: Here he is in 1850, living with unrelated people near Daniel Hineman, son of the senior John and Mary Hineman, and my John Hineman, son of Samuel.

Not only that, I just noticed today that there is a “stray” Daniel Hineman, age 18 Ohio, living with Daniel and family. Since Daniel Hineman and Mary Ann Devolt didn’t marry until 1840, he can’t be their son. I suppose the senior Daniel could have been married prior, but I have no record of that. Does anyone else?

So if the younger Daniel Hineman is not theirs, whose is he? Not only that, there is the pauper, Mary Hineman next door, who was born about 1840, Ohio. Who does she belong to?

Why are there 3 Hineman children farmed out? Why is the senior Samuel and wife nowhere to be found? Did they die? I suspect that at least one of them did, possibly both of them, since I can’t find Samuel anywhere. Every Samuel I have checked turned out to belong to someone else.

Emeline McConnel was married to William Henry Harrison Bedell. Her sister, Adaline was married to Alonzo McKoon, then John Tague Compton. Samuel Hineman gave his picture to Alonzo and Adaline’s daughter, Alice Elizabeth McKoon.

Emeline (McConnell) Bedell’s daughters, Emma and Minnie both married Compton’s, and another daughter, Lydia, married John H. Tait/Tate.

Samuel Hineman must have died between 1905 and 1910, probably in Sauk Co., Wisconsin, because I can’t find him on the 1910 census. He is NOT listed in the pre-1907 Wisconsin death records on Ancestry.

In fact, the only Hineman listed in the 1820 to 1907 WI death records for Sauk County,  is Margaret A. Hineman, which should be Margaret Ann Devolt. For some reason, I have her place of death listed as Willow Twp., Richland Co., Wisconsin.

DEATHS
Ms. Julia Hineman.

Mrs. Julia Hineman, aged 56 years, former well known resident of New Richmond, passed away at her home in East Mead Township suddenly last evening at 8:30 o’clock, after an illness of one year. The family moved to East Mead township about three years ago. Mrs. Hineman was a former member of the United Brethren church at Tryonville. She was secretary of the Kiser Hill Grange. The deceased leaves the husband, George Hineman, and the following children, Mrs. Charles Cutshall of Guys Mills, Miss Faye Hineman of Meadville, Carl Hineman at home, Mrs. Dela DeVillars of Cochranton. Cordelia passed away in infancy. There are three grandchildren.

The Body was removed to the Wald & Arnold funeral home in Meadville where services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock.

Marlene Neely Padgett

PADGETT Mrs. Marlene Neely Padgett, 77, passed away on April 27, 2009 after a long illness. She was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. David and Flora Neely in Beaver Falls, PA. Robert D. “Bob” Neely, 93, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Chippewa Township, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 11, 2009.

Born September 27, 1915, in Beaver Falls, he was the son of David A. Neely and Flora Baker Neely. He was a lifelong member of the College Hill Presbyterian Church and a life member of BPOE 348, Beaver Falls.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eleanor Masal Neely; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lana and John Sunner, Longoowd, FL, and Deborah and Larry Huddleston, Columbus, OH, and four grandchildren, Susan and Jillian Huddleston, and Robert and Kaitlin Sunner. He leaves two sisters, Helen Hurley, Beaver Falls, and Marlene Padgett, Jacksonville, FL, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Clyde Neely, and his sister, Margaret Hineman, both of Beaver Falls.

After 44 years of service, Bob retired from the former Babcock & Wilcox Company in 1977 as Assistant Superintendent of the East Works.

He was a veteran of World War II and recipient of the Purple Heart, serving in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific aboard the USS New Mexico.

Friends will be received Friday, February 20, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the HILL & KUNSELMAN FUNERAL HOME, www.hillandkunselman.com, 3801 Fourth Ave., College Hill, Beaver Falls. JACOB HINDMAN  [HINEMAN]

Jacob Hindman, aged about 73 years, one of the most prominent farmers in the vicinity of Big Run, died Saturday morning at 1 o’clock of diabetes after an illness of several months. The deceased located on a farm near Big Run in 1891 and had resided there since that time. He was a member of the Big Run Presbyterian church and active in his support of the church work. He is survived by his wife and five children — Joseph, of Big Run; Mrs. Alice Stiver, of this county, Mrs. J.S. Gray and John Hindman of Punxsutawney, and Earl, at home; also, two sisters and one brother. The funeral services were held yesterday morning, at 10 o’clock, in the Presbyterian church at Big Run by Rev. Morrison.

David Stiver.

David Stiver, one of the old and well known residents of Banks township, died Tuesday morning at 7 o’clock, of pneumonia aged 78 years. Mrs. Stiver preceded him to the grave three months ago. The deceased was a veteran of the Civil war, being a member of Co. K, 206th regiment, and was held in high esteem as a neighbor and citizen. George Stiver, aged 69 years, of Gaskill township, Jefferson county, who died on Thursday in the Punxsutawney hospital, following an illness of three months, was a native of Indiana county, having been born and reared in Canoe township. the deceased, who was a son of David and Elizabeth Stiver, located in Gaskill township shortly after his marriage in 1886 to Miss Martha J. Wainwright. He leaves his widow and these children: Mrs. Fred Heitzenrater, of Punxsutawney; James L. Stiver, of Big Run, and Warren and Thelma Stiver, at home. He also leaved these brothers and sisters: Mrs. Joseph McKee, Mrs. Annie Weaver and Clarence Stiver, of near Rossiter; Mrs. John Henry, of Rochester Mills; Mrs. W.H. Henry, of LaJose; Mrs. Harvey Day, of Punxsutawney, and S.R. and Charles Stiver, of Canoe township. The funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at the home and interment followed in the Pleasant Grove cemetery.

Clarence Stiver’s sister:

GRACE PEARCE, 97, Rossiter RD 1, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 1975 in the Adrian Hospital in Punxsutawney.

Born May 22, 1877, in Banks Twp., Indiana County, she was the daughter of David and Elizabeth Bradenbaugh Stiver.

She lived her entire life in the Rossiter area and was a member of Steffy Chapel United Methodist Church and the Ladies Aid of that church.

Surviving are six children:
Mrs. Fred (Lula) Means, Valier; Alvie Pearce, Gifford, Pa.; Mrs. William (Mildred) Digel, Cyclone, Pa.; Mrs. Clay (Gladys) Smith, Indiana RD 2; Mrs. Howard (Marguerite) Smith, Glen Campbell RD 1; and Norman Pearce, Rossiter RD 1; 19 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; on brother, Clarence Stiver.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George C. Pearce whom she married in 1896 and who died in 1946; and one son, Guy Pearce.

Friends will be received from 7-9 p.m. today and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Schenkemeyer Funeral Home in Punxsutawney where services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Marshall Armour will officiate and interment will be in the Dever Cemetery.

Hypothesis: I have been researching this John Hineman for months, because I just KNOW he is related to our Hineman’s.

This is something I noticed today, searching census records: David and Letitia Hineman had a grandson living with them in 1870 and 1880. 1870 census lists him as John INMAN, age 1. 1880 census lists him as Elmer HINEMAN, age 11.

One descendant of the William J. Hineman (son of David and Letitia)  line stated in an email that William had a first wife that died during or after childbirth, but she had no other information. Did the child live? Is John Elmer the child? That is what I want to figure out.

It doesn’t appear that John Elmer Hineman ever had any children.  His occupation was in the dentistry field (based on census info and death record.)

Here is the weird thing: Berenice’s death record says she is married, informant is John Hineman, husband in John Hineman. BUT, John E. Hineman died in 1936, and she died in 1940. Did John have a son named John? She is not listed as a widow. Were there two John Hineman’s in Youngtown who were in the dental field? That just seems unlikely unless one was a son. However, as the address for all three is the same, John had to have been married to both of them.

Another discrepancy in connecting this John is John Elmer Hineman’s birthdate is off two years, but since he married Berenice late in life, and she was the informant on his death record, maybe she was just off a couple of years.

The biggest issue would be that this John E Hineman’s death record it lists his father as John Hineman, not William. BUT, maybe William J. Hineman’s middle name was John, or maybe Bernice was mistaken about his name, especially with the age being off, if in fact it is the correct person at all.
