Death of David McQuown

David McQuown, and old and highly respected citizen of this place, died at his residence on Race Street, at seven o’clock Tuesday evening of heart disease. For years, Mr. McQuown had been in poor health and upon several occasions it was thought he would die. But being possessed naturally of a rugged constitution and an indomitable will, he managed to pull through all right. About three weeks ago, the old gentleman took sick and although all that loving hands and medical skill could do was done to prolong his life, yet they were of no avail, and at the hour above named the tired spirit passed away.

David McQuown was born at Derry township, Westmoreland County, March 9, 1806, and was in the eighty-fifth year of his age. In 1824 he left Westmoreland County and five years later he was united in marriage to Isabella Boreland, daughter of William Boreland. They were married by Rev. Blair of Indiana, PA. They moved to Crooked Creek, near where Kintersburg now stands, built a log cabin, and cleared a large farm. He remained there for a period of twenty eight years, and moved with his family to Jefferson County, locating permanently in Punxutawneyabout twenty one years ago, his wife dying in this place about two years later.

He was the father of eleven children, ten of whom are living, Mrs. Christina Clawson, this place; Mrs. Margaret Bowerstock of Frostburg; Mrs. Mary Clawson, Bell’s Mills; Mrs. Agnes Ruth, Nebraska; Eliza Helman, Blairsville; John, James and Samuel, of this place; A.B. killed in the Battle of Fair Oak; William L. of Nebraska and Miss Sarah Belle McQuown of this place with whom the old gentleman made his home. About sixty years ago Mr. McQuown identified himself with the Presbyterian Church, remaining a consistant member of that body until his removal to Punxsutawney, when he united with the C.P. Church, with which he remained ever since.

The remains were interred in the Covode Cemetery on last Thursday.

She was born in Indiana county and was a daughter of David McQuown. She married Joseph Clawson, an Indiana county farmer and came to Punxsutawney in 1865, living there until the time of her death. For some few years she had been making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Martin Williams.

Hypothesis: I have been researching this John Hineman for months, because I just KNOW he is related to our Hineman’s.

This is something I noticed today, searching census records: David and Letitia Hineman had a grandson living with them in 1870 and 1880. 1870 census lists him as John INMAN, age 1. 1880 census lists him as Elmer HINEMAN, age 11.

One descendant of the William J. Hineman (son of David and Letitia) line stated in an email that William had a first wife that died during or after childbirth, but she had no other information. Did the child live? Is John Elmer the child? That is what I want to figure out.

It doesn’t appear that John Elmer Hineman ever had any children. His occupation was in the dentistry field (based on census info and death record.)

Death Record:

DEATH RECORD for Olive Lenora Wigginton HINEMAN (first wife):

DEATH RECORD for Berenice Harris HINEMAN (possible second wife):

Here is the weird thing: Berenice’s death record says she is married, informant is John Hineman, husband in John Hineman. BUT, John E. Hineman died in 1936, and she died in 1940. Did John have a son named John? She is not listed as a widow. Were there two John Hineman’s in Youngtown who were in the dental field? That just seems unlikely unless one was a son. However, as the address for all three is the same, John had to have been married to both of them.

Another discrepancy in connecting this John is John Elmer Hineman’s birthdate is off two years, but since he married Berenice late in life, and she was the informant on his death record, maybe she was just off a couple of years.

The biggest issue would be that this John E Hineman’s death record it lists his father as John Hineman, not William. BUT, maybe William J. Hineman’s middle name was John, or maybe Bernice was mistaken about his name, especially with the age being off, if in fact it is the correct person at all.
