Mrs. Ralph M. Billig

Mrs. Hattie B. Billig, 79, of 211 N. Martin St. died at 11 o’clock last night following a lingering illness.

She was born Aug. 24, 1878, at Black Ash, a daughter of James and Mary Davison Hineman. She was married to Ralph M. Billig who died in November, 1938.

Mrs. Billig was a member of St. James’ Episcopal Church.

She leaves a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Velma Billig, with whom she made her home; four grandchildren, Wayne Billig, Erie; Gerald Billig, Titusville; Mrs. Betty Whitman, Titusville, and Mrs. Marian Gough, Tucson, Ariz., and 14 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Tracy Home of Funerals from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. James’ Church with Rev. William K. Reid, rector, officiating. Interment will be in the Kerr Hill Cemetery at Gresham.

The funeral service for Mrs. Hattie B. Billig was held Saturday at St. James’ Episcopal Church with Rev. William K. Reid officiating.

Interment was in Kerr Hill Cemetery with the following serving as pall-bearers: Ralph DeVillers, Russell DeVillers, James Oakes, Charles Cutchall Jr., Neil Cutchal and Bruce Allen.

DIAMOND, Nov. 25 — Acquaintances here of Mrs. Hattie Billig of Titusville were sorry to learn of her death. Mrs. Billig spent most of her married life in this area until the fall of 1920 when the family moved to Gresham then later to Titusville. The old home, a short distance south of Diamond where she began housekeeping and where the husband, Ralph Billig, lived since a small boy, has no buildings left and is now a part of the farm owned by Dr. A.W. Goodwin. Several Homemakers met in a body at the Tracy Funeral Home Friday afternoon to pay their respects.

Open House Planned By Diamond Couple

Mr. and Mrs. Homan Tracy of Route 1, Diamond, will be honored at open house Sunday, May 13, in observance of their golden wedding anniversary.

The celebrants were married 50 years ago April 17, but due to illness the celebration was postponed until Sunday.

The couple was married in Franklin, and have resided in their present home since that time. Mr. Tracy has been engaged in farming, retiring five years ago.

Mr. Tracy, a native of Diamond, is married to the former Sarah Green of East Troy. They are members of the Diamond Evangelical United Brethren Church.

Their children include: Mrs. Velma Billig, Mrs. Katherine Hope, Mrs. Carrie Wrigley, Mrs. Gladys Schlosser, all of Titusville, and Miss Anna Tracy at home. Another daughter, Mrs. Twila Proper, is deceased.

Mr. and Mrs. Homan Tracy celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary on Sunday. They were married at Franklin, April 17, 1901. Their children, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren were visitors and a wedding dinner was served. Mr. and Mrs. Tracy have always lived in Diamond community. CHILD’S ARM BROKEN
The great danger children court when they hang on the rear end of automobile trucks was forcibly demonstrated at Titusville Friday when Gerald, five year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn R. Billig, sustained injuries that resulted in the fracture of his right arm and painful bruises about the body. It is supposed he lost his hold on the truck and funn under the machine.

OBITUARY
Mrs. William J. Thompson

Mrs. Lydia Anna Thompson, wife of William J. Thompson and mother of Mrs. Florence L. Powers of Oil City, died at her home, 115 E. Spruce st., Titusville, early Wednesday morning.

Mrs. Thompson had been a resident of Titusville for the past 36 years. She and Mr. Thompson celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on September 13, 1942. She was a gold star mother; a son, William John, having died at Fort McHenry, Md., on January 5, 1919.

Surviving are her husband and the following children: Mrs. Powers of Oil City, Mrs. Ruth C. Billig, John A. and Walter C. Thompson of Titusville, Joseph G. Thompson of Rochester, N.Y., and Pfc. James R. Thompson of Camp Ehwze?, Texas; 10 grandchldren, four great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Maime Rapose of Rochester, N.Y.

A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the family home with Rev. Albert Broadhurst, pastor of St. James Memorial church, Titusville, officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn cemetery, Titusville.

Mrs. Ruth T. Billig

Mrs. Ruth Thompson Billig, 58, 733 West Spring Street, Titusville, died in the Titusville Hospital at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday following a heart attack suffered earlier that day in her home.

She was born in Erie January 8, 1898, a daughter of the late William and Lydia Rosech Thompson.

She was married March 3, 1924, to Frank Billig who died January 8, 1949. She was a devout member of St. James Memorial Episcopal Church, Titusville.

Mrs. Billig is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Betty Whitman of Titusville and Mrs. Marian Gough of Oceanside, Calif.; four grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Florence Powers of Oil City; three brothers, John and Walter Thompson of Titusville and Joseph Thompson of Rochester, N.Y.

The body is in the Tracy Home of Funerals, Titusville.

Arthur L. Billig, UNG Retiree, Dies

Arthur L. Billig, 89?, of Riverside Drive, Oil City RD 2, a retired employee of the United Natural Gas Co. died early Friday at his home.

Born Feb. 11, 1887, in Plum Township, near Wallaceville, he was a son of Charles and Lyda Brown Billig.

Mr. Billig had been employed as a foreman in the gas company’s meter repair department and retired in 1952.

He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, and a member of hte Cranberry Grange.

He was married Dec 18?, 1965, to Velma Tracy Billig, who survives.

Mr. Billig was previously married to the former Edith Loveless, who preceded him in death in 1965?.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two stepsons, Wayne Billig of Erie and Gerald Billig of Pleasantville; a brother John Billig of Titusville; eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the Charles A. Morrison Funeral Home. The family will received friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Rev. Larry Hauck?, pastor of the Grace United Methodist Church, will officiate.
Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Pleasantville.

Mr. Gerald T. Billig, 86, of 227 Water St., in Titusville (Billie Brown Building), died Wednesday, March 25, at Titusville Area Hospital.

Mr. Billig was born on Nov. 10, 1922, in Titusville, a son of the late Glenn and Velma Tracy Billig.

He was married to Maxine Downey on March 5, 1944, at Emporia, Kan.

Mr. Billig was a graduate of Colestock High School, class of 1940.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army as a radio operator and gunner with the 89th Division Army Infantry in the European Theatre.

He owned and operated a Nationwide Insurance Agency in Titusville for 35 years until his retirement in 1984.

Mr. Billig was a member of St. James Episcopal Church; a life member of the Bruce Shorts Post No. 5958 VFW; a member of the Cleo J. Ross Post No. 368 American Legion; and a former member of the Titusville Lodge No. 754 F.&A.M.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and recently celebrated his 65th wedding anniversary.

He is survived by his wife of Titusville; five children, Sharen Romaniszyn and husband, Neil, Douglas Billig and wife, Gail, Bruce Billig, Darryl Billig and wife, Debbie, all of Titusville and Dennis Billig and wife, Sharon, of O’Fallon, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Billig, and a brother, Wayne Billig.

No public visitation will be observed.  Friends may attend a memorial service on Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. James Memorial Episcopal Church with Rev. R. Samuel Williams officiating.

The family asks that memorials be made to St. James Memorial Fund or to the charity of one’s choice.

PULASKI TOWNSHIP – Oscar L. “Sonny” Hinkle, 68, of Pulaski Township, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004, in his home following a brief illness.

Born Aug. 1, 1935, in Industry, he was a son of the late Lee and Mary (Hineman) Hinkle. After his mother died, at the age of one Sonny was raised by his aunt and uncle, the late John and May Flinner in Pulaski Township, whom he always considered his parents. He had worked for many years for the former St. Joseph Lead Co., Potter Township, and Mansell Trucking, Industry. He was a member of the B.P.O.E. 238 Rochester.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Mary Ellen (Maloney) Hinkle; two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Kathy Hinkle, Stafford, Texas, and Chris and Carri Hinkle, Midland; a daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Jay Ostrow, Langhorne, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Kodie, Karlie, Erik, Erika, Ethan, Donovan and Jerod-Michael Hinkle; two sisters, Louella and her husband, Ward Chaffee, Beaver, and Mary Eakin, New Brighton, and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.

DAUGHERTY TOWNSHIP – Frances C. Brewer, 84, of Daugherty Township, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 6, 2005, in The Medical Center, Beaver.
Born Sept. 8, 1920, in Chippewa Township, a daughter of the late Ralph and Nellie Hineman Pflugh, she had been a resident of Daugherty Township most of her life. Mrs. Brewer was an active and faithful member of the Marion Hill Christian Missionary and Alliance Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lysle Brewer, in 1980, and a sister, Helen Russell Cataline, in 1994.
She will be sadly missed by her brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Nikki Pflugh, Zolfo Springs, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy Tate, Patterson Township; numerous loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and many friends.
Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the NOLL FUNERAL HOME INC., 333 Third St., Beaver. A service will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in the Marion Hill CMA Church by her pastor, the Rev. James Krause.

James Hart Boots, aged 78 years, Ellwood City mounted? route 7, died this morning at 8:23 o’clock in the Beaver Valley General hospital, where he was a patient for a week. Death followed a year’s illness. He was born in North Sewickley township. Mr. Boots was a carpenter by trade ans was a former member of the North Sewickley Presbyterian church. Survivors include nine children: Wilbur Boots, Knox P?an, Clarence Boots, Mrs. Harry Householder and Mrs. Mabel Vance, all of Wampum, Mrs. Eva Gallaher, North Sewickley township, Mrs. Sarah Blinnlienry?, Lester and Norman Boots, all of the Ellwood City-Zellenople road?. ELLWOOD CITY, May 2.–Another one of Ellwood City’s few nonagenarians has crossed the horizon as Mrs. Samantha Boots, who in her 96th year, passed away on Monday morning at 1? o’clock at Mrs. Stella Pat?on’s Nursing home in Conway. Mrs. Boots had been in failing health for a number of years, but only became seriously ill on Sunday. A daughter of the late James H?. and Elizabeth Hazen, well known and highly respected pioneer residents of this district, she was born on June 11, 1843, in North Sewickley township and was the last surviving member of her family. Her husband, James D. Boots preceded her in death 21 years ago. With her husband she resided in Marion Twp. until 1908?, when they moved to Ellwood City. She was a life-long member of the Providence Baptist church of North Sewickley and was the oldest living member. Surviving are two sons, J.H. Boots, of College Hill; H.R. Boots, Ellwood City and three daughters Mrs. G.N. Hazen, Celia, Mrs. Walter Jackson, Country Club road and Mrs. Pearl Hart?, Conway. She was preceded in death by one son, Samuel and four daughters, Mrs. Henry Caven, Mrs. Adda Bilnn?, Mrs. Molly Pflugh, and Mrs. Grace Dusterer?. Eighteen grandchildren and a number of great granchildren and a great-great grandchildren also survive. Friends will be received tonight from 7 until 10 p.m. at the I.J. Van Gorder funeral home, in Fifth street, this city. On Wednesday, the body will be removed to the Provicdence Baptist church at North Sewickley where it will lie in state until 2 p.m. when funeral services will be conducted by the church pastor, Rev. J.R. Routledge. Interment will be made in the church cemetery.

Mother Trying To Get Possession Of House From Son
Case of Samantha M. Boots Against Samuel C. Boots On Trial At Court
Ejectment action brought by Mrs. Samantha M. Boots against her son, Samuel C. Boots, and daughter-in-law, Lula Boots, to secure possession of a property in Ellwood City, is being heard before Judge Hildebrand in county court today. Mrs. Samantha M. Boots, who is around 80 years of age, is the widow of James D. Boots. Under the will of her husband she was left a life interest in the property in question, with the right to consume the principal should it become necessary. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Boots is said to have made an agreement with her son and daughter-in-law whereby they were to move into her house. She was to retain one room and they were to have the balance and provide meals for Mrs. Boots. This arrangement was continued for some time when, owing to friction, Mrs. Samantha Boots wanted to secure sole possession of her home. The defendants refused to move out, claiming that it was not in accordance with the agreement made and further alleging that they had faithfully performed their part of the agreement. Mrs. Samantha Boots left the house and is now trying to get possession of it again.

In the case of Samantha M. Boots against Samuel C. and Lulu E. Boots, which was tried before Judge Hildebrand in county court, a verdict was rendered in favor of the plaintiff for Ellwood City premises in dispute. This was the case in which Samantha M. Boots had been left a life interest in an estate. Her son, Samuel C. Boots and his wife went to live in the house to take care of Mrs. Boots, the plaintiff. She became tired of the arrangement and left later bringing action in ejectment to secure possession of the property. The verdict gives her possession as desired.

James H. Hazen Passes Away at an Advanced Age.
James J. Hazen died at Pine Hill, Beaver county, recently, aged 81 years. He had a number of relatives residing in the lower part of Lawrence county and also in Beaver county, among whom were two brothers, Isaac and Loren, and one sister, Martha Bennett, and three children, one daughter, Samantha Boots, and two sons, Judson M. and Osgood. Besides these there are many more distant relatives and a large circle of friends. Deceased was a member of the Providence Baptist church, of North Sewickley. He was baptized into the fellowship of this church on September 30, 1838, by Rev. Thomas Daniels?. For many years he was the leader in the singing and was very active in all church work, fully comprehending what each effort might mean, and how far-reaching his influence might be.

Well Known Pioneer Resident Dies At Home Here This Morning, Following Stroke
ELLWOOD CITY, Jun 17.–Dr. Judson M. Hazen, well known pioneer resident of this community, passed away at ? o’clock this morning at his home at 22 Pittsburgh Circle. For the past five months he had been confined to his bed from a paralytic stroke. A resident of this community all his life he was born 83 years ago in the old stone house on the New Brighton road at the forks to Beaver Falls. Later he became identified with medicine and practiced in North Sewickley residing in the old farm house which was purchased from him for the Ellwood Country Club in 1917 also several acres of ground on which the present golf course is laid out. Dr. Hazen’s untiring thoughtfulness and devotion has made him many faithful friends who greatly mourn his passing. Immediate survivors are his wife, Mrs. Jennie A. Hazen, two daughters Mrs. Ford Zelgler [maybe Zeigler]of the Pittsburgh Circle and Mrs. O.L. Blinn of Mirian township, eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren a brother, J.O. Hazen of this city and a sister Mrs. J.D. Boots of Beaver Falls. Funeral services will take place Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 in the North Sewickley church and interment will be made in the North Sewickley cemetery. The family asks that friends kindly omit the sending of flowers.

Last Rites Held For Samuel Boots
Many People Pay Tribute To Well Known Local Man Yesterday
ELLWOOD CITY, Mar. 1.–The last rites for Samuel Boots were held yesterday afternoon from the late home on Pittsburgh Circle which was thronged with bereaved relatives and friends. A short service was held at the home at 1:30 with Rev. A.M. Stevenson, pastor of the First Presbyterian church in charge. The 27th psalm was read by Rev. Stevenson as a result of a request by the deceased before death. Final tribute to Mr. Boots was paid in the church where another service was held at 3 o’clock. His friends of the Odd Fellow’s lodge bore? the remains to the final resting place. The club held a service for him at the home last Sunday evening. Interment too place in the North Sewickley Cemetery and the pallbearers were James McKim, Emory Neuman, A.A. Logue, Ben Bartle, James Anderson, and Ed Christy.

Mrs. Lulu Boots Dies In Hospital
ELLWOOD CITY–Mrs. Lulu E. Boots, of Rr.329 Pittsburgh Circle, died at 1:55 a.m. today in Ellwood City General Hospital after a four months illness. She was born in North Sewickley, Beaver County, daughter of the late Rudolph and Dorothea Ketterer Brandenburger. A lifetime resident of this area, she held membership in Christ Church, United Presbyterian. She was secretary of the Senior Citizens of the church and a past member of C.A. Martin Bible Class. Samuel C. Boots, her husband, died in 1932. A son Paul R. Boots survives in Ellwood City, along with one grandchild and three great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters Mrs. Amanda Hoffman, New Brighton; Edith Brandenburger, Beaver Falls; and a brother Philip Brandenburger, Fombell. The family will receive friends in the Kenneth C. Turner Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. today and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday. Services in the funeral home Sunday at 2 p.m. will be conducted by Rev. E. Vincent Stratton, Christ Church UP assisted by Rev. William Underwood, Christian Missionary Alliance Church. Interment will be in North Sewickley Cemetery.

ELLWOOD CITY, June 11–Death claimed one of North Sewickley township’s most respected residents yesterday morning when Mrs. Anna Wilson Pflugh, aged 55, succumbed at the Providence hospital at Beaver Falls following a major operation which was performed several days ago. She is survived by her husband, Charles Pflugh; five daughters, Mrs. Charles Herman and Mrs. Gaylord Hepler, Beaver Falls, and Ella, Frances and Clara at home; one son, Charles, at home; two brothers, George and Aaron Wilson of Beaver Falls, and three sisters, Mrs. Sadie Bonzo of Ellwood City, Mrs. Eli McCanel of Frisco and Mrs. Jeff Kennedy of Beaver Falls. One daughter, Esther, preceded her in death a few weeks ago. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock from the late home with Rev. R.E. Bell of the North Sewickley Presbyterian church in charge. Interment will be made in the Concord cemetery.

ELLWOOD CITY. Apr. 10–Miss Esther Pflugh, aged 24, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pflugh of the Beaver Falls road succumbed to a lingering illness yesterday morning at 7:30 at her home. Miss Pflugh was a popular young lady of North Sewickley township and her death brought sorrows to her many friends. ELLWOOD CITY Elsie (Pflugh) Bobich, 90, formerly of Country Club Drive, Ellwood City, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2006, in Friendship Ridge, Brighton Township.
Born June 16, 1915, in Marion Township, a daughter of the late Leslie and Helen (Kimmich) Pflugh, she had worked at the former Ellwood City Knitting Mill for a number of years and was a member of the Union Goodwill Community Church, Ellwood City.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Clifford Sr., Norman and Fred Pflugh, and a sister, Ethel Hardy.
Surviving are several nieces, nephews, their families and many friends.
Graveside services will be held today at 1 p.m. in the North Sewickley Cemetery, Chapel Road, North Sewickley Township, with Pastor Eugene McConnell officiating.
Memorials may be made in her name, if desired, to the Union Goodwill Community Church, 950 East St., Ellwood City, Pa. 16117.

William McQuown, a native of Indiana county, died at his home in Franklin, Wednesday, May 17, at the age of 79 years. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in the Sixty-seventh Pennsylvania regiment and the First Veteran Reserve corps.

McQuown, of Grant township, and Mrs. Geo. Edminston, of Indiana. Mr. McQuown enlisted from Grant township, this county, in Co. E, 67 P.V., Gen. Harry White’s famous regiment, in 1861. He was taken prisoner at Winchester, Va., in June, 1863, and imprisoned at Libby Prison nine months.

William McQuown, a former resident of this county, died at his home in Franklin, Pa., on Wednesday, May 16, age 80 years. The deceased was a brother of the late Lawrence McQuown, of Canoe township, and a brother of Mrs. John Elder, Mrs. Henry Black and Mrs. James Bash, all of this county, deceased. MRS. MARGARET M’QUOWN
Mrs. Margaret McQuown died at the residence of her son, W.W. McQuown, Esp., of Mahaffey, Pa., April 28, 1895, aged 72 years and 16 days. The deceased was a daughter of Col. William Shields, late of Indiana, Pa., who died November 29, 1860. She was born in the town of Indiana when it was a mere hamlet, and was married to William McQuown in the year 1846. She was the mother of six children, and had two great-grandchildren. Her children all survive her except one daughter, Mrs. Emma Garbey, of Gazzara, Pa., who died eight years ago. The surviving children’s names are, James A., of Ord, Pa.; Mrs. Annie M. Potts, of Horatio, Pa.; W.W., of Mahaffey; Senator M.L., of Clearfield, and Nina Edmiston, of Indiana. She was a sister of James T. Shields, of Taylorsville, and William Shields, of Indiana. She is the last but one of seven sisters, Mrs. Amanda Alford, of Sterling, Neb., being the surviving one. Mrs. McQuown’s sufferings were intense but she endured them with christian fortitude. The deceased was a kind and gentle old lady and was a devoted member of the Baptist church. To her death had no terrors. She longed and prayed for the sweet rest which she was sure it would bring, and her tired spirit sank as composedly into its arms as a weary traveler to his couch of repose. The remains were interred in the Bowen cemetery on Tuesday, April 30. Rev. R.L. Williams conducted the funeral services.

CLOE–Joseph Clark Hineman, 75, died at his home here Saturday evening, May 15. A son of the late Jacob and Sarah Coffman Hineman, the deceased was born April 2, 1873 in Henderson Township, Jefferson County. Surviving him is his widow, Esther McQueown Hineman, and the following children: Mrs. Merle Byers, Mahaffey; Paul, Barnesboro and a foster son, James serving in the U.S. Army. Among other survivors are 12 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Belle Gray and Mrs. Alice Stiver, both of Punxsutawney; Earl, Big Run and John of Pittsburgh. Funeral services will be held from the Pleasant Grove Church, Jefferson County, Wednesday, May 19, at 2:30p.m. (DST) with Rev. Herbert Gearhart of Plumville officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. VICTOR McQUOWN
MAHAFFEY–Victor McQuown, a native of Mahaffey but for the past 35 years a resident of Meadville, Crawford County, died in the City Hospital there Monday at 2:30 p.m. following a short illness. Born at Mahaffey Feb. 2, 1886, he was a son of the late Wallace W. and Susan Catherine (Shaffer) McQuown. He followed the building trades and carpentry until his retirement a few years ago. Surviving are his wife, the former Hazel Sunderland of Bell Township, Clearfield County, and one brother, Andrew McQuown of Mahaffey. Funeral services will be held from the McCracken Funeral Home, Mahaffey, Thursday at 2 p.m., the Rev. John E. Stebbins officiating. Interment will be made in Mahaffey Cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home after 7 p.m. today and until time of services tomorrow.

ANDREW McQUOWN
MAHAFFEY–Private funeral services for Andrew McQuown, a resident of Mahaffey who died in the Adrian Hospital at Punzsutawney May 10 at 8:10 p.m., were held from the T.R. McCracken Funeral Home, Mahaffey, this morning at 9 o’clock. The Rev. Kenneth A. Burket, officiated. Born at Mahffey Dec. 26, 1888, Mr. McQuown was a son of the late William W. and Susan C. (Shaffer) McQuown. As a young boy he operated a newspaper route at Mahaffey and while waiting at the railroad station for papers to arrive, he learned telegraphy. He later served the Pennsylvania Railroad as a telegraph operator for 15 years and then the New York Central Railroad for 16 years until he retired in 1953. In September 1913 he married the former Martha Florence Bellis, who survives with two sons and one daughter: Andrew Bellis McQuown, Ridgeway; Aaron McQuown; Mrs. Wallace (Martha) Whitmore, Richmond, Va. Mr. McQuown was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Senator Martin Luther McQuown, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred Bartles, at Seattle Wash., Wednesday, July 24th, as related briefly in The Progress of that date, was born near Marchand, Indiana County, January, 18, 1852. He was reared on the farm and when the Civil War broke out his father and elder brother enlisted, leaving his mother to struggle with a large family to support. “Luther”, as he was best known, started out for himself and in the late sixties came to New Washington, this County, worked on the neighborhood farms and started to learn the shoemaking trade. He attended school when possible and when the New Washington Normal was organized attended that institution and qualified for teaching. He taught in various parts of the County until 1878, when he was elected County superintendent and re-elected in 1881. He proved a successful administrator of the public schools of the County. While thus engaged he registered as a law student in the office of Murray & Gordon and was admitted to the Clearfield bar in 1884. After his term as County superintendent expired he practiced for several years and at same time was State representative of one of the leading lyceums, providing lectures, entertainers, etc., wherever desired. In 1890 he purchased the Raftsman’s Journal from S.J. Row & Son and conducted that well known Republican newspaper until three years ago. Meantime, in 1901, he was elected to the State Senate from this district, the Thirty-fourth. He served the full term. He was also active in Republican County and State politics many years, always standing loyal to the faction led by the late M.S. Quay. He was married in 1878 to Miss Virginia Flegal, of Goshen Township, who preceded him to the other life several years ago. They had four children, three daughters and one son. Mrs. Fred Bartles alone survives. Senator McQuown was a most likeable man, possessed of a heart as big as all outdoors, giving of his means wherever and whenever solicited. He never turned anyone away and often gave when “it hurt.” He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and of Clearfield Lodge of Elks, No. 540. He was also a member of the Masonic order for many years. Everybody in Clearfield liked Senator McQuown, whether of same political faith or otherwise. His genial disposition and kindly manner won friends and kept them steadfast. His passing will be sincerely mourned by thousands in Clearfield County. No word has been received as to whether the body will be brought to Clearfield, but it was believed that for the present, at least, the remains will be held at Seattle. It was thought that eventually they will be interred here, where Mrs. McQuown and three children are buried.
