Mr. and Mrs. George Hineman, a bride and groom of recent date, will, we are informed, leave Tryonville this week and take up housekeeping near Black Ash. We had been in hopes that Mr. Hineman could have seen his way clear to have remained in Tryonville, at least this winter. During the few months that Mr. Hineman has been a resident of Tryonville, he has made many warm friends and all will regret their departure.

George Hineman received word Monday that his brother-in-law, Edward Hunt, the young man who was fatally injured on the  Lake Shore railroad at Youngstown, O., Saturday night, died the following morning and that the remains would be brought to Black Ash Monday for burial. Mr. and Mrs. Hineman left to attend the funeral. The deceased also has a cousin here in town, Mrs. William Kohmand {I think it is actually HOHMANN) hard to read spelling of this name], who is deeply grieved over his untimely death.

A PLUM RESIDENT HAS PASSED AWAY

Crawford Billig Died at Home Monday.

Crawford Billig, for 69 years a resident of Plum township and widely known and generally respected, died at the family home at Diamond yesterday, following an illness of organic heart disease.

The decedent who was born in Mercer county 70 years ago, with his parents came to Plum township and nearly all his life was passed in the locality where he passed away. He was a veteran of the Civil war and served for eighteen months with Company I, Fourth Pennsylvania volunteers.

He is survived by his widow and one son, Ralph Billig, both residents of Diamond, route 2, R.F.D.

Funeral services will be conducted at the residence at 1:30 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Herman Armstrong of Corry officiating. The burial will be at the Chapmanville cemetery.

Friends are kindly asked to omit sending flowers.

Merton Hindman, aged 36 years, a farmer of Plum township, fell twenty-one feet from a barn where he was working two miles north of Copperstown Friday, sustaining injuries that are expected to prove fatal. His skull was crushed. He is married and has a family.

John Merton Hindeman, aged 38, died at the home of Lemuel Keeley near his home Sunday morning. On Friday morning Mr. Hindeman started for his work, very happy. He was a carpenter and expected to complete a barn he was working on that day. He had just climbed up in the barn on one of the beams and got nicely to work when he fell backward and down twenty-five feet, striking the back of his head, breaking the bones, on a stone wall. He did not regain consciousness and died Sunday morning at 10 o’clock at the Baptist church at Bradleytown. Interment in the Plum Valley cemetery. The deceased was loved by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his great loss a wife, a father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. James Hindeman, two brothers, George Hindeman of near Guy’s Mills and William Hindeman of Union City, and two sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Brown* of Titusville and Mrs. Hattie Billig of Diamond.

*Lizzie (Hineman)  Brown……..widow of Edward Hunt. Even with a new married name, I still cannot find her on any additional census records.

The closest Brown’s I have found are living next door to Joseph W. Hineman, Lizzie’s uncle. On the 1910 census, here is a Henry Brown and a Willis Brown, one married to an Effie A., and the other an Ellen A., but both couples have been married more than a few years.

Daniel Howell was married to Susannah N. Hineman, daughter of John Hineman and Mary Magdalene McConnell. Evidently, they had a daughter by the name of Ida, but I haven’t been able to find out what happened to her.

Agnes Hineman and Jeremiah McClelland’s daughter, Sylvia married Marshall A. Stull, at least that is who it APPEARS  to have been. This looks like his 2nd or 3rd marriage.  According to census records, he was born about 1873, so he was younger than Sylvia, although the 1910 census seems to have her age fudged a bit, as it is listed as 1872 and prior census records show abt. 1866.  1910 census (Palmetto, Manatee, Florida) states they had been married 2 years, had one child, no longer living.  Marshall’s brother, Morgan, age 20, was living with them in Florida. There seems to be ANOTHER Morgan A. Stull, same age, living in Plum township, Venango Co., PA,  father also born NJ, but with a wife by the name of Maud E, whose father was born in Ireland.

Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Stull of Tampa, Fla., are guests of the latter’s father and sisters, Jeremiah McClelland and the Misses Anna and Elizabeth McClelland and Mrs. Clyde Arters.

EDWARD HUNT KILLED AT YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.

Black Ash Man Struck by a Train and Passed Away on Sunday.

Edward Hunt, aged 32 years, a resident of Black Ash and a brother of W.L. Hunt and Frank Hunt of this city, died in Youngstown, O., Sunday afternoon as the result of injuries received Friday, when he was struck by a train. Mr. Hunt left home last Wednesday, driving to Franklin. He went to Youngstown, looking for work. While no accurate information  has been received, it is supposed by his family that he secured employment as a brakeman and met his death soon afterward. W.L. Hunt went to Youngstown yesterday morning, but his brother died before he reached that city. He is survived by his wife, formerly Lizzie Hineman, and three small children. There are also five brothers and one sister, as follows: W.L. and Frank, Titusville; Lyman, Casey, Ill.; Warren, West Virginia; Earl, Buffalo; Mrs. Charles Herron [Perrin], Brockton, N.Y.

The body will be brought to Black Ash for funeral services and burial.

BODY OF EDWARD HUNT BROUGHT TO SUNVILLE

Services In His Remembrance Will Be Held There This Morning.

W.L. Hunt of the Friedman Hotel, who was called to Youngstown Sunday morning by a message announcing the injury and death of his late brother, Edward Hunt of Black Ash, returned home last night. He brought the body of his brother to Meadville and it was sent from that city to Sunville where funeral services in his memory will be held at 10 o’clock this morning. Mr. Hunt, who was 32 years of age, was killed by a train on the Lake Shore road. He went to Franklin last Wednesday and there me some friends, with whom he formerly worked on the road as a brakeman. He accepted their invitation to go to Youngstown. It was was when he was about to leave that city Saturday evening that he met with the fatal accident. In attempting to board a train his hand slipped on the rail and he was thrown under the wheels. His legs and arms were badly mangled and his head was hurt. He was taken to the Youngstown City hospital and died at 6 o’clock the following morning.

Word was received here Saturday of the death of Warren Hunt of Liberty, West Va.
Mr. Hunt was born at Tryonville, Pa., Aug. 13?, 1861. He was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyman T. Hunt, whose family formerly resided at Tryonville.

He was married about thirty-five years ago to Miss Callie Kilgore of Hadley, Pa., and shortly afterward moved to West Va.

Besides his wife and seven children, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. James Hineman of Black Ash, this county, and four brothers and one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Perrin of Westfield, N.Y., Lyman Hunt of Black Ash, Earl Hunt of Kennerdell, and Frank E. and William L. Hunt of this city.

Funeral services in his memory will be held Monday, March 6, at Liberty, W. Va.

Mrs. Layman [Lyman] Hunt

BLACK ASH — Mrs. Nellie Hunt, 87, formerly of Black Ash, died in the Lady Victory Hospital in Hamburg, N.Y., Sunday evening following a long illness.

She was born in Mercer County on November 23, 1868. Her husband, Lyman Hunt, died in July, 1945. Mr. and Mrs. Hunt had operated a store in Black Ash for over 20 years.

She leaves the following children: Clyde M. Hunt of Sudan, Kan., May Wilcox of Franklin, Mrs. Hazen Foster of Hamburg, N.Y., Clara Thompson of Meadville and William L. Hunt, Great Bend, Kan. She also leaves eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and on great-great-grandchild.

The body is in the Williams Funeral Home in Chapmanville.

CHAPMANVILLE — The funeral service for Mrs. Lyman Hunt was held Thursday in the Williams Funeral Home in Chapmanville.

Rev. J.L. Murray, who officiated, read the hymns “Jesus Saviour Pilot Me” and “Abide With Me,” and the poem, “The Watcher.”

Mrs. Sherman Foster

Mrs. Edith Foster, 90, of 354 Autumn Drive, Meadville, died in Meadville City Hospital at 2 p.m. Thursday following an illness of several months.

She was born near Sugar Lake on Sept. 15, 1877, the daughter of Warren and Sarah Brink Hanks. She married Sherman Foster, who died in 1953. She was a former resident of South Troy.

Mrs. Foster was a member of the Chapmanville Community Church, Diamond Grange and the Senior Citizens Club of Meadville. Her hobby was the study of herbs, their uses in medicine and cooking.

She is survived by a son, Hazen Foster of Warren, Ohio; a step-daughter, Mrs. Hattie Proper of Chapmanville; four grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; two brothers — Andrew Hanks of Cooperstown and Charles Hanks of Pittsburgh. One brother and five sisters died previously.

Friends may call at the Horace D. Williams Funeral Home in Chapmanville any time today and Saturday. The funeral service will be held there Sunday at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Norman Bradney of the Community Church officiating.

Interment will be in Chapmanville Cemetery.

Mrs. Edith Foster, 90, Succumbs In Meadville

CHAPMANVILLE — Mrs. Edith Foster, 90 who spent much of her life as a resident of Chapmanville, died in the Meadville City Hospital at 2 p.m. Thursday following several months’ illness. In recent years she had been residing at 354 Autumn Drive, Meadville.

She was born near Sugar Lake September 15, 1877, daughter of Warren and Sarah Brink Hanks, and she spent her early life in that area. She was married to Sherman Foster, who died in 1953.

For 63 years she lived in Chapmanville where she was a member of the Community Church and the Diamond Grange. She also belonged to he Senior Citizens Club of Meadville.

For many years she was a regular participant in the curb market at Titusville, selling vegetables, fruits, herbs, soil from the woods, baked goods, milk, butter and eggs. She curtailed this practice when she was 82 and had to quit driving her car.

She is survived by a son, Hazen Foster, of Warren, Ohio; a step-daughter, Mrs. Hattie Proper of Chapmanville; four grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren; two brothers, Andrew Hanks of Cooperstown, and Charles Hanks of Pittsburgh. One brother and five sisters are deceased.

The body is at the Williams Funeral Home, Chapmanville.

BLADE OF SAW KILLS FARMER

Clarence O. Proper Dies Instantly in Accident Near Chapmanville

Clarence O. Proper, 56, prominent farmer and dairyman of Plum township and well known in Odd Fellow circles in this section, was instantly killed about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday when the blade of the power saw he was using struck him in the face and nearly severed his head from his body, according to Dr. P.E. Cunningham of Franklin, Venango county coroner.

Mr. Proper, with several other men, was engaged in cutting firewood at his home, Diamond, R.D. located east of Chapmanville, and was usiing a saw, two feet in diameter, which was powered by a tractor. Proper of Cleveland, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Lester O. Walters of Oil City; and seven grandchildren.

The body was taken to the McKinley-Williams funeral home at Chapmanville and will be moved to the home this evening. A funeral service will be condudted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the home with Rev. John L. Murray, pastor of the Chapmanville Methodist church, officiating. Interment will be at Chapmanville.

Shirley Bimber, 61

Shirley E. Bimber, 61, of Hydetown and Zellwood, Fla., died at 1:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006, in Zellwood following an extended illness. This is a change of address notification that Shirley has now arrived in her brand new home.

Shirley was born in Corry on June 3, 1945, the daughter of Margaret Proper Bimber and the late Milburn S. “Milt”  Bimber. She graduated from Titusville High School in 1963. Shirley was formerly employed as a secretary for Universal Cyclops Federal Credit Union.

Shirley was a member of Calvary Assembly of God Church in Winter Park, Fla. She also attended Titusville United Methodist Church.

She was a former member of Lin Van Lanes Wednesday night pick-up league. Shirley enjoyed camping, traveling in her motor home and meeting people.

Survivors include her mother of Titusville; her good friend Beverly Cisney of Hydetown; uncle and aunts, Thomas and Shirley Bimber of Hydetown, Dorothy Bimber of Grand Valley and Helen Proper of Titusville; and several cousins.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her sister, Sharon Bimber.

No calling hours will be observed. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at Titusville United Methodist Church by Rev. William Blair, pastor.

Interment of cremains will be in Excelsior Cemetery. Remembrance donations may be made to Calvary Assembly of God Church, 1199 Clay Ave., Winter Park, Fla. 32789, Hospice of the Comforter, 480 W. She was born on July 20, 1874, in Bradleytown, and lived most of her life in that community.

Her children preceded her in death. Surviving are five grandchildren, James Smith, New Orleans; Dean Smith, Erie; Richard Smith, California; Twila Smith, Meadville, and Mrs. Marilyn Mehaelose?, Townville.

For 1870, I couldn’t find her father, Robert Jennings, so I searched for Merton, who was old enough to show up on the census record.

AGED MAN OF BRADLEYTOWN SHOOTS SELF

James Hindman, 80, Commits Suicide in Woods Near Home, Jury Says

WAS ILL LONG TIME

His head nearly blown off by a shotgun, James Hindman, 80, of Bradleytown, was found before dawn Monday morning in the woods near Black Ash, Crawford county, after he had gone to the secluded spot to end his life. In——-(increasing?) infirmities and diseases of old age, of which he had complained frequently, are said to be the motives for his suicide.

Relatives led the search for the aged man, after he had been missing all night from his home.

The circumstances of the death wound and the position of the weapon used led Hugh D. Brown, deputy coroner, in the absence of the regular official, and a coroner’s jury to return the suicide verdict. The aged man had evidently placed the stock of the shotgun on the ground, and faced away from the barrel, when he fired the shot.

Mrs. Rhoda Phillips, a sister-in-lw of the dead man, heard the shot at 11 o’clock Sunday night, but did not investigate.

Surviving the deceased are his widow, aged and an invalid, and three children: Mrs. Hattie Billig, of near Diamond, John Hindman, of New Richmond, and William Hindman, of Oregon. Also one grandson, making his home with the family, Clifford Hunt.

Regarding James’ sister, Rachel, who is living with him in two census years, the name looks like it could be spelled Shoutz. I have tried searching for her with various spelling variations, but haven’t been able to find her. The married name I have for her in my family tree is MOSLEY, but I can’t locate her under that name, or the MARVEN surname either. There is a Rachel Marven, living with Susan Howell, who is a sister of Rachel Hineman, although the Rachel is listed as a servant, not sister, so I am not sure it is her, but she has the same birth year.

I also can’t locate his sister, Adaline or his parents, other than the 1900 census. I would assume his mother died prior to 1920, since Clifford is with his grandparents, and the obitiary above does not mention her, so he is definitely not still living in 1923.

Not only do I think this is the correct family (they were in Crawford Co., PA on other census records) BUT I also think this is the Ellen that was later married to James K. Hineman. It makes sense that they would marry since they were raising Clifford Hunt, their grandson, and would also explain why Edward and Elizabeth cannot be found. So…my theory is that James married Edward’s mother! She is the correct and and was born in New York.

Mrs. Ralph M. Billig

Mrs. Hattie B. Billig, 79, of 211 N. Martin St. died at 11 o’clock last night following a lingering illness.

She was born Aug. 24, 1878, at Black Ash, a daughter of James and Mary Davison Hineman. She was married to Ralph M. Billig who died in November, 1938.

Mrs. Billig was a member of St. James’ Episcopal Church.

She leaves a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Velma Billig, with whom she made her home; four grandchildren, Wayne Billig, Erie; Gerald Billig, Titusville; Mrs. Betty Whitman, Titusville, and Mrs. Marian Gough, Tucson, Ariz., and 14 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Tracy Home of Funerals from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. James’ Church with Rev. William K. Reid, rector, officiating. Interment will be in the Kerr Hill Cemetery at Gresham.

The funeral service for Mrs. Hattie B. Billig was held Saturday at St. James’ Episcopal Church with Rev. William K. Reid officiating.

Interment was in Kerr Hill Cemetery with the following serving as pall-bearers: Ralph DeVillers, Russell DeVillers, James Oakes, Charles Cutchall Jr., Neil Cutchal and Bruce Allen.

Attending the service from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Billig, Mrs. Mildred Allen and Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Allen of Erie, Mrs. Faye Oakes and James Oakes of Mt. NEWS OF DIAMOND

DIAMOND, Nov. 25 — Acquaintances here of Mrs. Hattie Billig of Titusville were sorry to learn of her death. Mrs. Billig spent most of her married life in this area until the fall of 1920 when the family moved to Gresham then later to Titusville. The old home, a short distance south of Diamond where she began housekeeping and where the husband, Ralph Billig, lived since a small boy, has no buildings left and is now a part of the farm owned by Dr. A.W. Goodwin. Several Homemakers met in a body at the Tracy Funeral Home Friday afternoon to pay their respects.

Open House Planned By Diamond Couple

Mr. and Mrs. Homan Tracy of Route 1, Diamond, will be honored at open house Sunday, May 13, in observance of their golden wedding anniversary.

The celebrants were married 50 years ago April 17, but due to illness the celebration was postponed until Sunday.

The couple was married in Franklin, and have resided in their present home since that time. Mr. Tracy has been engaged in farming, retiring five years ago.

Mr. Tracy, a native of Diamond, is married to the former Sarah Green of East Troy. They are members of the Diamond Evangelical United Brethren Church.

Their children include: Mrs. Velma Billig, Mrs. Katherine Hope, Mrs. Carrie Wrigley, Mrs. Gladys Schlosser, all of Titusville, and Miss Anna Tracy at home. Another daughter, Mrs. Twila Proper, is deceased.

Mr. and Mrs. Homan Tracy celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary on Sunday. They were married at Franklin, April 17, 1901. Their children, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren were visitors and a wedding dinner was served. Mr. and Mrs. Tracy have always lived in Diamond community. To Mr. and Mrs. Tracy were born six daughters; Twila, wife of Isaiah Proper, died February 20, 1937. CHILD’S ARM BROKEN
The great danger children court when they hang on the rear end of automobile trucks was forcibly demonstrated at Titusville Friday when Gerald, five year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn R. Billig, sustained injuries that resulted in the fracture of his right arm and painful bruises about the body. It is supposed he lost his hold on the truck and funn under the machine.

OBITUARY
Mrs. William J. Thompson

Mrs. Lydia Anna Thompson, wife of William J. Thompson and mother of Mrs. Florence L. Powers of Oil City, died at her home, 115 E. Spruce st., Titusville, early Wednesday morning.

Mrs. Thompson had been a resident of Titusville for the past 36 years. She and Mr. Thompson celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on September 13, 1942. She was a gold star mother; a son, William John, having died at Fort McHenry, Md., on January 5, 1919.

Surviving are her husband and the following children: Mrs. Powers of Oil City, Mrs. Ruth C. Billig, John A. and Walter C. Thompson of Titusville, Joseph G. Thompson of Rochester, N.Y., and Pfc. James R. Thompson of Camp Ehwze?, Texas; 10 grandchldren, four great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Maime Rapose of Rochester, N.Y.

A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the family home with Rev. Albert Broadhurst, pastor of St. James Memorial church, Titusville, officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn cemetery, Titusville.

Mrs. Ruth T. Billig

Mrs. Ruth Thompson Billig, 58, 733 West Spring Street, Titusville, died in the Titusville Hospital at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday following a heart attack suffered earlier that day in her home.

She was born in Erie January 8, 1898, a daughter of the late William and Lydia Rosech Thompson.

She was married March 3, 1924, to Frank Billig who died January 8, 1949. She was a devout member of St. James Memorial Episcopal Church, Titusville.

Mrs. Billig is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Betty Whitman of Titusville and Mrs. Marian Gough of Oceanside, Calif.; four grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Florence Powers of Oil City; three brothers, John and Walter Thompson of Titusville and Joseph Thompson of Rochester, N.Y.

The body is in the Tracy Home of Funerals, Titusville.

Mr. and Mrs. Billig were attended by Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Billig of Titusville.

They will reside on Riverside Drive in Oil City.

Arthur L. Billig, UNG Retiree, Dies

Arthur L. Billig, 89?, of Riverside Drive, Oil City RD 2, a retired employee of the United Natural Gas Co. died early Friday at his home.

Born Feb. 11, 1887, in Plum Township, near Wallaceville, he was a son of Charles and Lyda Brown Billig.

Mr. Billig had been employed as a foreman in the gas company’s meter repair department and retired in 1952.

He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, and a member of hte Cranberry Grange.

He was married Dec 18?, 1965, to Velma Tracy Billig, who survives.

Mr. Billig was previously married to the former Edith Loveless, who preceded him in death in 1965?.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two stepsons, Wayne Billig of Erie and Gerald Billig of Pleasantville; a brother John Billig of Titusville; eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the Charles A. Morrison Funeral Home. The family will received friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Rev. Larry Hauck?, pastor of the Grace United Methodist Church, will officiate.
Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Pleasantville.

Gerald T. Billig, 86

Mr. Gerald T. Billig, 86, of 227 Water St., in Titusville (Billie Brown Building), died Wednesday, March 25, at Titusville Area Hospital.

Mr. Billig was born on Nov. 10, 1922, in Titusville, a son of the late Glenn and Velma Tracy Billig.

He was married to Maxine Downey on March 5, 1944, at Emporia, Kan.

Mr. Billig was a graduate of Colestock High School, class of 1940.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army as a radio operator and gunner with the 89th Division Army Infantry in the European Theatre.

He owned and operated a Nationwide Insurance Agency in Titusville for 35 years until his retirement in 1984.

Mr. Billig was a member of St. James Episcopal Church; a life member of the Bruce Shorts Post No. 5958 VFW; a member of the Cleo J. Ross Post No. 368 American Legion; and a former member of the Titusville Lodge No. 754 F.&A.M.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and recently celebrated his 65th wedding anniversary.

He is survived by his wife of Titusville; five children, Sharen Romaniszyn and husband, Neil, Douglas Billig and wife, Gail, Bruce Billig, Darryl Billig and wife, Debbie, all of Titusville and Dennis Billig and wife, Sharon, of O’Fallon, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Billig, and a brother, Wayne Billig.

No public visitation will be observed.  Friends may attend a memorial service on Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. James Memorial Episcopal Church with Rev. R. Samuel Williams officiating.

The family asks that memorials be made to St. James Memorial Fund or to the charity of one’s choice.

The Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Julia Hineman.

Mrs. Julia Hineman, aged 56 years, former well known resident of New Richmond, passed away at her home in East Mead Township suddenly last evening at 8:30 o’clock, after an illness of one year. The family moved to East Mead township about three years ago. Mrs. Hineman was a former member of the United Brethren church at Tryonville. She was secretary of the Kiser Hill Grange. The deceased leaves the husband, George Hineman, and the following children, Mrs. Charles Cutshall of Guys Mills, Miss Faye Hineman of Meadville, Carl Hineman at home, Mrs. Dela DeVillars of Cochranton. Cordelia passed away in infancy. There are three grandchildren.

The Body was removed to the Wald & Arnold funeral home in Meadville where services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock.
