My Mother’s Bible.

BY GEORGE P. MORRIS.

This book is all that’s left me now!
Tears will unbidden start;
With faltering lip and throbbing brow,
I press it to my heart.
For many generations past,
Here is our family tree;
My Mother’s hands this Bible clasped;
She, dying, gave it me.

Ah! well do I remember those
Whose names these records bear;
Who round the hearthstone used to close
After the evening prayer;
And speak of what these pages said,
In tones my heart would thrill!
Though they are living with the dead,
Here are they living still!

My Father read this Holy Book
To brothers, sisters dear;
How calm was my poor mother’s look,
Who lov’d God’s word to hear;
Her angel face — I see it yet!
What thronging memories come!
Again that little group is met
Within the halls of home!

Thou truest friend man ever knew,
Thy constancy I’ve tried;
Where all were false I found thee true,
My counsellor and guide.
The mines of earth no treasures give
That could this volume buy;
In teaching me the way to live,
It taught me how to die.

PROBABLY NOT RELATED: although of Scotch-Irish ancestry:

I stumbled across this first obituary and decided to do a little research because I knew we had a Laura Maud (Margaret) Hineman married to an Edwin Rankin in our HINEMAN tree. This is NOT that same couple, but I am wondering if they might be related to our Hineman family somehow.

UPDATE #3: There is a family tree on ancestry that lists parents of William B. Hindman as James Hindman and Clementina Messenkop, and lists Mary E. McMahon as William’s wife. It also gives William’s year of death as 1922, NJ.

I had run across the Clementina Hindman/Hineman when searching other Hineman lines, but so far, haven’t found a connection. These are Lancaster Co., PA Hindmans.

UPDATE #4: This should be the last update. I found the following book on Google that has a bio for James E. Hindman, wife, Clementina Messenkop:

History of Pittsburgh and environs: biographical, Volume 1
By American Historical Company LINK to read it.

NOTE: It has a picture of one James E. Hineman, perhaps, his grandson.

Harriet Carey/Cary, born 28 Oct 1825 in Hanover, Luzerne Co., PA – died 01 Aug 1907 in Tomah, Monroe Co., WI.

Harriet’s father was Benjamin Cary, born about 1803, Hanover, Luzerne Co., PA – died abt 1871 in Wisconsin, probably in Tomah, Monroe County, as he was living there in 1870.

Her mother was Jane Smiley, born abt 1803 PA – died abt 1872, Monroe Co., WI.

John and Harriet were married 08 Apr 1847 in Fulton, Rock Co., Wisconsin

————————————————

Miles Leroy Hineman married Elizabeth Ann “Lizzie” Rowan 05 Nov 1879 in Tomah, Monroe Co., Wisconsin.

Lizzie, was born Dec 1860, in Monroe Co., WI, was the daughter of Thomas Rowan and Sarah McMullen, both born in Ireland.

—————————————–

Miles and Lizzie had the following children:

Miles Gardner Hineman: b: 30 Sep 1880 Tomah, Monroe, WI - (Gardie Hineman)

Ralph W Hineman: b: 07 May 1882                   “                  “

Pearl Hineman: b: Aug 1885                                  “                  “

Ruby L  Hineman: b: 11 Apr 1891                       “                  “

Amy Louise Hineman: b: 30 Jun 1896           “                  “

Glen Wellyn Hineman: 01 Sep 1902                “                  “

——————————————-

Gardie is my direct line:

Gardie Hineman married Olive Bessie Martin 05 Nov 1910 in Minot, Ward Co., ND. They had one son, Nathan Hineman, born 15 Aug 1912 in Monroe Co., WI. Bessie died in 1914 from TB, leaving Nathan and another young son, Ladoit “Dick” Houston, from a previous marriage.

Gardie next married Frances Adams (Adamski,) 28 Dec 1916 in Minot, Ward Co., ND. They moved to Omaha, Nebraska sometime before 1920.

—————————————–

Ralph W. Hineman married Emma B Pingel on 11 May 1904, in Wilton, Monroe, Wisconsin. They had 8 children: Leslie, Gerald, Virgil, Laura, Avery, Gertrude and Wesley. They also moved to Omaha, Nebraska, sometime in the 1920’s.

—————————————–

Pearl Hineman married Ralph W. Bowen on 05 Nov 1905 in Monroe Co., WI. They had no children. Gardie’s son, Nathan, evidently lived with them for an unknown period of time around 1920, as he appears on the census with them, and I found a mention of him in an Eau Claire Co., WI newspaper, which is where Pearl and Ralph were living at the time. I think Pearl and Ralph may have lived in the Chicago, IL area around 1910, but then returned to the Augusta area.

——————————————

Ruby L. Hineman married William Ernst Gerke on 28 Nov 1909 in Wisconsin. They had 7 children: Harold, Raymond, Miles, Pearl, Allen, Howard and Maxine. They stayed in Wisconsin.

——————————————-

Amy Louise Hineman married Earl Benjaman Scott about 1914, probably in WI. Amy and Earl had 8 children: Elizabeth, June, Allen, Robert, Katherine, Rose, Richard and John. They lived in the Augusta, Eau Claire Co., WI area.

——————————————-

Glen Wellyn Hineman married Florence Caroline Mackey about 1924. They had 2 sons, Earl Raymond, born in Wisconsin, and James Miles, born in Minnesota. It appears they were divorced, as Glen was living in North Dakota in 1930, and later, ended up in Blaine, Montana, while Florence was still in Minnesota, living with her parents in 1930.

———————————–

This is just an outline of the Miles Leroy Hineman family. I will be posting more information on the various children and related families in separate posts.

If you are related to any of these people, or think there might be some connection, feel free to leave me a comment; I would love to hear from you.

Thompson A. Hineman was the son (and youngest child) of Alexander Hineman and Amanda Jane Ewing.

Because he was born in 1881, Thompson does not appear on any census record with his parents, however they are listed on his death record.

Something I noticed on the 1880 census: There was a Thompson family living near the Alexander Hineman family. Not sure if there is ANY connection at this point, but something I will try to research further.

Okay, on to what I have found so far: Thompson seems to have been a bit of a delinquent. According to the 1900 census, he was an inmate in a reformatory.

Name: Thompson Hineman
Home in 1900: Madison, Richland, Ohio
Age: 20
Birth Date: Apr 1880
Birthplace: Pennsylvania
Race: White
Ethnicity: American
Gender: Male
Relationship to Head of House: Inmate
Father’s Birthplace: Virginia
Marital Status:     Single
Residence : Ohio State Reformatory, Richland, Ohio

NEW PRISONERS RECEIVED — Guard Anderson brought to the reformatory from Lisbon, Columbia [sic.] County, Charles Nelson, Edward Hanselman and Thompson Hineman.

Evidently, he was quite the crafty fellow:

I can’t find Thompson anywhere, under any name variation in 1930, but he should have been in East Liverpool, Columbiana Co., OH, I would think. He died there 28 Jul 1941.

Dessie Straight Hawkins Hineman Hawkins died 16 Aug 1936 in Marion Co., WV.

As an aside, I think this is Dessie’s father in 1930:

** Ancestry is being funny and won’t load any census images right now, so I can’t check to see the name of the facility/prison or whatever. I had looked at it before, but didn’t make a note of the name.

*Lizzie (Hineman) Brown……..widow of Edward Hunt. Even with a new married name, I still cannot find her on any additional census records.

The closest Brown’s I have found are living next door to Joseph W. Hineman, Lizzie’s uncle. On the 1910 census, here is a Henry Brown and a Willis Brown, one married to an Effie A., and the other an Ellen A., but both couples have been married more than a few years.

Real Estate Transfers

Susan N. Howell to Daniel Howell, Oil Creek, 45 acres.

Titusville Morning Herald (Titusville, Pennsylvania) November 10, 1905

*****

NOTE: Below, you can see Daniel Howell now has the farm up for sale, so Susan Hineman Howell must have passed away. I think she must have known she was dying, and transferred ownership over to her husband for this reason.

ANOTHER NOTE: On the ad above, there is also a Thomas Shontz farm and a I.Z. Seltzer farm for sale. Susan Hineman Howell’s sister, Rachel was married to a Shontz at one time, but never appears on a census with him. [Thomas Shontz appears to have been married first to an Amanda, then a Jennie] Also, Minerva Seltzer’s father was I.G. Seltzer. She was married to William Marshall Hineman, a son of James K. Hineman. I don’t known if I.G. and I.Z. are related or not, but I think there is a good possibility that they could be.

Daniel Howell, a widower, was living with his sister-in-law, Agnes Hineman McClelland and her family in 1910.

*****

Here is the funeral notice for Agnes Hineman McClelland:

Funeral Today — Funeral services over the remains of the late Mrs. Jeremiah McClelland will be held at 11 o’clock this forenoon at the Chapmanville Baptist church, Rev. C.H. Wood will be in charge.

Titusville Herald (Titusville, Pennsylvania) September 28, 1915

*****

Agnes Hineman and Jeremiah McClelland’s daughter, Sylvia married Marshall A. Stull, at least that is who it APPEARS to have been. This looks like his 2nd or 3rd marriage. According to census records, he was born about 1873, so he was younger than Sylvia, although the 1910 census seems to have her age fudged a bit, as it is listed as 1872 and prior census records show abt. 1866. 1910 census (Palmetto, Manatee, Florida) states they had been married 2 years, had one child, no longer living. Marshall’s brother, Morgan, age 20, was living with them in Florida. There seems to be ANOTHER Morgan A. Stull, same age, living in Plum township, Venango Co., PA, father also born NJ, but with a wife by the name of Maud E, whose father was born in Ireland.

Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Stull of Tampa, Fla., are guests of the latter’s father and sisters, Jeremiah McClelland and the Misses Anna and Elizabeth McClelland and Mrs. Clyde Arters.

Titusville Herald (Titusville, Pennsylvania) June 1, 1916

NOTE: Minnie McClelland, daughter of Agnes Hineman, was married to Clyde Arters.

EDWARD HUNT KILLED AT YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.

Black Ash Man Struck by a Train and Passed Away on Sunday.

Edward Hunt, aged 32 years, a resident of Black Ash and a brother of W.L. Hunt and Frank Hunt of this city, died in Youngstown, O., Sunday afternoon as the result of injuries received Friday, when he was struck by a train. Mr. Hunt left home last Wednesday, driving to Franklin. He went to Youngstown, looking for work. While no accurate information has been received, it is supposed by his family that he secured employment as a brakeman and met his death soon afterward. W.L. Hunt went to Youngstown yesterday morning, but his brother died before he reached that city. He is survived by his wife, formerly Lizzie Hineman, and three small children. There are also five brothers and one sister, as follows: W.L. and Frank, Titusville; Lyman, Casey, Ill.; Warren, West Virginia; Earl, Buffalo; Mrs. Charles Herron [Perrin], Brockton, N.Y.

W.L. He brought the body of his brother to Meadville and it was sent from that city to Sunville where funeral services in his memory will be held at 10 o’clock this morning. Mr. Hunt, who was 32 years of age, was killed by a train on the Lake Shore road. He went to Franklin last Wednesday and there me some friends, with whom he formerly worked on the road as a brakeman. He accepted their invitation to go to Youngstown. It was was when he was about to leave that city Saturday evening that he met with the fatal accident. In attempting to board a train his hand slipped on the rail and he was thrown under the wheels. His legs and arms were badly mangled and his head was hurt. He was taken to the Youngstown City hospital and died at 6 o’clock the following morning.

Murphy’s Laws of Genealogy

1. The public ceremony in which your distinguished ancestor participated, and at which the platform collapsed under him, turned out to be a hanging.

2. When at last, after much hard work, you have solved the mystery that you have been working on for two years, your aunt says, “I could have told you that.”

3. You search ten years for your great-grandmother’ s maiden name only to eventually find it on a letter in a box in the attic-and it turns out to be Jones.

4. You never asked your father about his family when he was alive because you weren’t interested in genealogy then.

5. The will you need is in the safe on board the Titanic.

6. Copies of old newspapers have holes occurring only on the surnames.

7. John, son of Thomas the immigrant whom your relatives claim as the family progenitor, died on board ship at the age of 10.

8. Your great grandfather’ s newspaper obituary states that he died leaving no issue of record.

9. Another genealogiest has just insulted the keeper of the vital records you need.

10. The relative who had all the family photographs gave them all to her daughter who has no interest in genealogy and no inclination to share.

11. The only record you find for your great-great- great-grandfathe r is the names of the men who sat on the inquest of his death (and the fact that they were paid one dollar for it.)

12. The one document that would supply the missing link in your dead end line has been lost due to fire, flood or war.

13. The town clerk to whom you wrote for the information sends you a long handwritten letter which is totally illegible.

14. The spelling of your European ancestor’s name bears no relationship to its current spelling or pronunciation.

15. None of the pictures in your recently deceased grandmother’ s photo album have names written on them.

16. No one in your family tree ever did anything noteworthy, owned property, was sued or was named in a will.

17. You learn that your great aunt’s executor just sold her life’s collection of family genealogical materials to a flea market dealer “somewhere in New York City“.

18. Ink fades and paper deteriorates at a rate inversely proportional to the value of the data recorded.

19. The 37 volume, 16,000 page history of your county of origin isn’t indexed.

20. You finally find your great grandparents’ wedding record and discover the bride’s father’s name was John Smith. The bride’s mother’s name is listed as “Jane”.
