HORSESHOEBOTTOM PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.  Rev. Dr. Samuel Ralston, D. D., received a call from this and Mingo Creek congregations in November, 1796, which he accepted and was therefore ordained. In the latter church be labored forty years, and in the former thirty-five years.  This Horseshoebottom congregation was originally established three and one half miles from Parkinson’s Ferry, on the ridge road leading from this place to Brownsville on Simon Wilson’s farm.  It was a log church, had a graveyard connected with it , and part of the foundation is still visible.

Dr. Ralston preached in this church until 1807, when it was removed to (Williamsport) Monongahela City.  Mr. Moore, says: Dr. Ralston preached his first sermon in a little school-house near the present church building, preaching two years in the winter time in the school house, and in the summer time in a tent in a sugar grove below town.  Mr. Lamb and his wife were the first two persons who joined the church in Williamsport.  The first communion was held in August, 1816, when Dr. Ralston was assisted by Rev. Matthew Brown, D. D.  The whole number of communicants at that time was forty-five.

The church is located on Chess Street, a neat, substantial brick building; its pulpit has been filled by Rev. Dr. Ralston until 1835.  His successors have been Rev. George D. Porter, from 1835 to 1838, Rev. J. W. Kerr from 1839 to 1861, Rev. S. G. Dunlap from 1862 to 1867, Rev. J. S. Sutchell from 1867 to the present time, but I learn he has sent in his resignation.

The following persons have been ordained ruling elders since the pastorate of Dr. Ralston, viz.:  James Hair, James McGrew, James Martin, Robert McFarland, Aaron Kerr, Isaac VanVoorhis, James Gordon, Henry Fulton, Joseph Kiddoo, John Power, James Dickey, James Curry, E. W. Tower, John Wright, Francis J. Gardner, David Moore, David D. Yohe, Samuel Hindman, three of whom have passed into the spirit land, each upwards of eighty years of age, to receive a crown of righteousness.

There is a Sabbath school connected with the church, which by the last report numbers 17 teachers, 250 scholars, and has a library of about fifteen hundred volumes.  Its organization is placed at various dates, but the Rev. Mr. Dunlap thinks it was established in the year 1822.

The Presbyterian Church of Monongahela was organized in 1796 at Horseshoe Bottom by Rev. Samuel Ralston, and in 1807 it was moved to Parkinson’s Ferry, where it first met in a tent. Services were held in a schoolhouse until 1815, when the first house of worship was erected, on the hill between Third and Jackson streets. In 1836 the second church was erected on Chess Street on the site of the present Eagles Building. The present church was built in the seventies at a cost of $35,000. The first pastor was Rev. Samuel Ralston, D. D. The present minister is Rev. W. F. McKee, D. D., and the membership is 765.

Mr. Dickey died Sept. 9th, 1864, and Mr. Kiddoo Aug. 11th, 1870. April 7th, 1862, a call was made out for the services of Rev. S.G. Dunlap. He was installed Dec. 6th, 1862, and remained pastor until Sept. 29th, 1866, about four years. Under his ministrations fifty-five were added on examination in 1863 and twenty-eight in 1864. Mr. Dunlap died in 1871 at Orrville, Ohio. Dec. 6th, 1862, Mr. E. W. Tower was installed, and Messrs. John Wright, Francis I. Gardner and David Moore were ordained elders of the church. Mr. Tower was drowned in the Monongahela River Feb. 19th, 1869, and Mr. Moore died May 11th, 1867. Dec. 30th, 1866, the congregation voted a call to Rev. J. S. Stuchell, who was installed May 10th, 1867, and continued pastor until April 1st, 1870, a period of three years. Mr. Stuchell died Oct. 1875. Oct. 26th, 1867, Messrs. Wm. C. Shaw, D. D. Yohe and Samuel Hindman were ordained elders. Mr. Yohe died Aug. 7th, 1868. Oct. 1st, 1871, a call was made out for the present pastor. He began his labors as pastor elect Oct. 16th, was installed Nov. 6th, 1871. At a congregational meeting held January 20th, 1868, it was resolved to build a new house of worship, and committees were appointed to procure a site and solicit subscriptions. The building committee were Messrs. Aaron Brawdy, H. H. Finley, T. R. Hazzard, Esq., John Patterson, James Stockdale, Wm. J. Alexander, Jas. H. Van Voorhis and Francis I. Gardner. The present house of worship was built at a total cost of about $32,000.00. The lecture room was dedicated by divine service March 17th, 1872, the first sermon being in the text John 2, 19. The house was brought to its present state of completion the next year, and dedicated June 8th, 1873, the pastor [p.65] preaching the sermon from Is. 56, 7, and Mark 11, 17. He was assisted in the service by the other pastors of the town, also by his predecessor, Rev. J. S. Stuchell, who preached in the evening. Messrs. Jas. Van Voorhis and John Patterson were elected and ordained, and Mr. Hindman was installed elder January 21st, 1872.

RBE- probably the Sam Hineman who bought 60 acres on Cross Creek in 1783; the local historian, Isaac Craig, says in a letter to another local historian, Boyd Crumrine,[43]-? a man named Hindman was said by General Richard Butler to be one of the worst;?. this being the only man of that name on the list we have to assume he was talking of Samuel Hindeman/Hindman.- but what does ?one of the worst?; mean ?that he killed the most or was one of the most vicious? General Richard Butler was a well respected Continental officer who as a Colonel was at Fort  Pitt near the time of this expedition, and became Indian Agent immediately thereafter so he would have had reason to have been paying attention.

PROBABLY NOT RELATED: although of Scotch-Irish ancestry:

I stumbled across this first obituary and decided to do a little research because I knew we had a Laura Maud (Margaret) Hineman married to an Edwin Rankin in our HINEMAN tree. This is NOT that same couple, but I am wondering if they might be related to our Hineman family somehow.

UPDATE #3: There is a family tree on ancestry that lists parents of William B. Hindman as James Hindman and Clementina Messenkop, and lists Mary E. McMahon as William’s wife. It also gives William’s year of death as 1922, NJ.

I had run across the Clementina Hindman/Hineman when searching other Hineman lines, but so far, haven’t found a connection. These are Lancaster Co., PA Hindmans.

Last rites will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the McCain funeral home for Mrs. Bertha Elizabeth FALLSTICK, 65, R.R. 2, Macy, who died Friday after a two-year illness.

Mrs. Fallstick was born at Philadelphia on April 21, 1898, the daughter of Edward and Martha HINEMAN RANKIN. She was married Oct. 20, 1915, to Elmer FALLSTICK, who survives. A resident of Macy 18 years, she had moved there from Berlin, N.J. Mrs. Fallstick was a member of the Macy Methodist church.

Also surviving are three sons, Jeff [FALLSTICK], Chicago; Charles [FALLSTICK], Peru, and Kenneth [FALLSTICK], Freeland, Mich.; one daughter, Mrs. Joann MILLER, R.R. 2, Macy; five grandchildren, and three brothers, Raymond and Foy RANKLI [Rankin?], both of Chicago, ad Edward RANKIN, Redwood, Cal.

Joann E. MILLER, 56, Rt. 2, Macy, died at 3:54 p.m. Thursday at Dukes Memorial Hospital, Peru.

She was born in Atco, N.J., to Elmer L. and Bertha E. RANKIN FALLSTICK.  A 1955 graduate of Deedsville High School, she worked at Standard Fusee Corp., Peru, and was a member of the Macy United Methodist Church and the Rochester chapter of Women of the Moose.

Surviving are two brothers, Charles H. FALLSTICK, Peru, and Kenneth J. FALLSTICK, Freeland, Mich.

There will be no service or visitation.  Burial will be in the Deedsville I.O.O.F. Cemetery.  Arrangements have been made by McClain Funeral Home in Denver.  Memorials may be made to the Miami County Heart Association.

The friends of Phillp Hindeman will be sorry to learn of his death, which occurred at the home of his brother James Hindeman, Tuesday at noon. Mr. Hindeman was 75 years old and had been sick for six weeks. He leaves to mourn his death one son, Joseph Hindeman, of this place; three daughters, Mrs. Nan Vancamp, Mrs. Etta Ferry of this place and Mrs. Lizzie Thurston of Titusville; one brother wit  whom he resided, James Hindeman and two sisters, Mrs. Agnes McClelland and Mrs. Rachel Shontz, both of this place, besides a large circle of friends. Funeral services will be held in Sugar Lake church. Interment in Sugar Lake cemetery.

QUESTION: Nancy Mahala Hineman, daughter of Philip married “Mann” George Augustus VinCamp/VanCamp? Which surname is it? Did it change over time? One census clearly spells it VinCamp. Newspaper references use both spellings. One tree on Ancestry.com lists the surname just as “Camp.” Their son, Clyde’s WWI draft registration lists William Clyde VanCamp, with Ina Cleo as wife. WWII draft registration says Clyde (states specifically: no middle) VinCamp, and Nancy VinCamp (his mom?) is listed as person who will always know him.

Oh, and where did the name/nickname, “Mann” come from?

Mt. Hope Cemetery index lists surname as VinCamp. ** Just checked find-a-grave and there are pictures of the gravestones which say, “VINCAMP.” In addition, the information listed on find-a-grave about Nancy (Hineman) Vincamp has her maiden name spelled as HINDMAN. LINK TO GRAVESTONES

Mrs. Thurston, 82, Dies Today

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Thurston, 82, widow of William D. Thurston, died at 4:25 a.m. today in the Oil City Hospital.

She had not been well for some time. On December 21, Mrs. Thurston fell and fractured her hip.

She had resided in the home of her daughter, Mrs. G.C. McLaughlin, 327 Linden Avenue, for the past 14 years.

A daughter of the late Philip and Mary Ann Dennington Hineman, she was born June 5, 1873 in Sugar Lake. She is the last member of her family.

She was united in marriage with the late William D. Thurston October 23, 1894.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. McLaughlin; two granddaughters, Mrs. Paul McLaughlin and Mrs. Phin Rudolph, both of Oil City, and one great-granddaughter, Cheryl McLaughlin, also of Oil City. A number of nieces and nephews also survive Mrs. Thurston.

McLaughlin, 327 Linden Avenue, with whom she made her home; two granddaughters, Mrs. Paul McLaughlin and Mrs. Phin Rudolph, both of Oil City, and one great granddaughter, Cheryl McLaughlin, also of Oil City. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. The body is in the Reinsel Funeral Home where friends may call and attend services at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Rev. Herman Bielenberg, pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Crawford County.

Grover McLaughlin Dies At Residence

Grover C. McLaughlin, 87, of 327 Linden Ave., a retired employe of the Pennsylvania Railroad and former school crossing guard at Reed and West First streets, died unexpectedly Sunday morning in his home.

He was born December 15, 1887, in Summerville, a son of the late Nathan and Lucy Carrier McLaughlin. He attended the Summervilee public schools.

He was a railroad man for nearly 54 1/2 years, retiring January 1, 1957, as a freight conductor for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He started with the New York Central on the old Summerville to Clarion run and later transferred to the PRR. He worked in Pittsburgh, Conway, Shire Oaks, Buffalo, Erie, Olean, and Pitcairn.

Mr. McLaughlin had served as chairman of the Order of Railroad Conductors and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.

After he retired from the railroad, he filled the job as crossing guard for a number of years. He said at one time when interviewed that “the children are all right, it’s the drivers that worry me.”

He used to do gardening in the summer months in the Venus area and sold the produce in his neighborhood.

Mr. McLaughlin was twice married. His first wife, the former Merlie Yeaney, died in 1925. His second wife, the former Maude Thurston, survives. They were married in June 1941.

Also surviving are four sons, Joseph R. McLaughlin of Birmingham, Ala., John W. McLaughlin of Venus, Philip A. McLaughlin of Pittsburgh and Paul M. McLaughlin of Oil City; three daughters, Mrs. Anna Kresinski and Mrs. Evelyn McLaughlin of Oil City and Mrs. Shirley A. Rudolph of Erie; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mr. McLaughlin was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Seven brothers and a sister are deceased.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the Joseph Reinsel Funeral Home, where the family will received firends from 2 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Rev. Merle Wonderling, retired pastor of the Seneca United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in the Lutheran Cemetery at Shannondale.

Thomas D. McLaughlin, 73, of 765 Lathrop Street, New Castle, died in Jamison Memorial Hospital at 4:25 p.m. Thursday following a brief illness.

He was born in Summerville, Pa. July 30, 1882, a son of Nathan A. and Lucy Carrier McLaughlin.

Mr. McLaughlin has been retired for about one year. He was formerly employed by the Associated Box Corporation, New Castle.

He was a member of the Calvary Independent Church, New Castle.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Carrie Fox McLaughlin; two daughters, Norma and Mildred, at home; three brothers, Grover C. McLaughlin of Oil City, Robert and James McLaughlin of Summerville.

The body is in the H.L. Reynolds Funeral Home, New Castle, where funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today. Rev. Howard V. Sartell, Calvary Church and Rev. Lew Stuart, New Castle Bible Church, will be in charge.

Interment will be in the Oak Park Cemetery, New Castle.

Interment was in West View Cemetery, Summerville. Pallbearers were Alvin, Max, Phillip, Allen, Gary and James McLaughlin, all nephews of Mr. McLaughlin.

Mr. McLaughlin was born October 6, 1894, at Summerville, the son of Nathan A. and Lucy Carrier McLaughlin.

Surviving are two brothers, James R. of Summerville and Grover McLaughlin of Oil City, and a number of nieces and nephews.

SUMMERVILLE — James R. McLaughlin, 74, died at 11:45 a.m. Sunday at St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh following an extended illness.

He was born July 1, 1897 in Clover Township, Jefferson County, the youngest of eight sons and one daughter born to Nathan A. and Lucy Carrier McLaughlin. He spent his early life on the farm where he was born, and in later years worked as a coal miner and for the Hanley Brick Company of Summerville.

McLaughlin is survived by one brother, Grover C. McLaughlin, of Linden Avenue, Oil City, and several nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Summerville.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Summerville with Rev. Merle Wanderling of the Seneca United Methodist Church officiating.

Pallbearers were: Alvin, Max, Robert, Allen and Phillip McLaughlin, all nephews of the deceased.

Interment was in Westview Cemetery in Summerville.

Guy Mills Couple Are Honored

Mr. and Mrs. Lester Graham of Guy Mills were honored Monday at an open house in observation of their 60th wedding anniversary.

The couple received many nice gifts and a purse of money.

Host and hostesses for the affair were the couple’s son, Russell W. Graham, president and treasurer of the Corry Peat Products Co., and two nieces, Mrs. Paul Reese and Mrs. Gerald Lang.

Mrs. Graham, the former Elnora Gertrude Reese and Mr. Graham were married at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. Reese of Wayne Township on Jan. 1, 1902.

They have resided on the farm where they now live for the past 53 years. Another son, Orville, died 36 years ago at the age of 17.

Farming has been Mr. Graham’s career until two years ago when he retired. Both he and Mrs. Graham are active members of the Mount Hope Methodist Church.

Mrs. Sylva Graham Smith, 80, died yesterday morning after a long illness. She was born in Wayne Township, Crawford County on April 29, 1881, the daughter of Benjamin and Blanche McIlory Graham. She married Sherman E. Lupher in 1902 and he died Nov. 29, 1933. She later married Raymond E. Smith on Dec. 2, 1959 and he died Dec. 29, 1959.

She was a member of the Townville Methodist Church, and held the oldest membership of that church. She was the Sunday school teacher of the adult class. She was also a member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service and a charter member of the WCTU, and the Pierian Club of Townville.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Max (Mary) Masters of Cambridge Springs; two sons, Manley H. Lupher of Townville, and Watson A. Lupher of Erie; one sister, Mrs. Ina VinCamp of Meadville; two brothers, Alfred Graham of Deckards Run, and Lester Graham of Mt. Hope; 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Three children preceded her in death. They were Helen L Dennis, Vance G. Lupher and Willard S. Lupher.

Friends may call at the Willis L. Arnold Funeral Home in Townville from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Townville Methodist Church, with Rev. L.D. Owens, pastor, officiating. Rev. Albert J. Broadhurst, retired minister, will assist. Mary Lovina Lupher Masters, 87, died at Westbury United Methodist Community in Meadville, Pa. on April 28, 2009. The cause of death was old age, an affliction of the elderly. She was born in Townville, Pa. on July 20, 1921 on her parents’ farm in Randolph Township, a daughter of the late Sherman E. and Sylva Graham Lupher.

She married Max E. Masters of Cambridge Springs on February 26, 1943 in the United Methodist Church in Houston, TX. Her husband Max preceded her in death June 17, 1986. Mary was named after two great grandmothers, Mary Pond and Lovina Lupher, who were buried in the Guys Mills, Hatch Cemetery. They were descendants of the earliest Pilgrim and Puritan settlers that arrived in Massachusetts before 1640. She was active in the United Methodist Churches of Townville, Cambridge Springs, Asbury of Erie and Bedford. At her death, she was a member of Stone United Methodist Church in Meadville were she served as the President of the United Methodist Women from 2001-2007. Mary was a life time member of the Golden Crown Chapter, Order of Easter Star, Daughters of the American Revolution, Civil War Daughters and the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century serving offices in each organization, including Regent of DAR. Her sense of patriotism was deep as evidenced by her dedication to these organizations and to the study of her family’s genealogy. At age 70 she joined the Senior Center’s Tapping Tootsies and was their oldest member for many years.

Surviving are: her daughter, Gayle Fuhrman of Meadville, Gayle’s son Rich Hemenway and his wife Denise of Pensacola, Fla., and Gayle’s daughter, Colleen Ouellette and her husband Matt of Sheridan, Wyo.; Mary’s son, David Masters and his wife Kathy of Edinboro, David’s daughter, Lexi Snow and her husband Matt and their daughter Kara of Guys Mills and David’s Son Ben Masters of Honolulu, Hawaii and Mary’s daughter, Annette King and her husband Jack and their three children Danielle, Chad and Trevor of Wexford, Pa.

Preceding her in death were her sister, Helen (and husband Karl) Dennis and her four brothers, Watson A. (and wife Margaret) Lupher, Vance (and wife Millie) Lupher, Willard (and wife Thelma) Lupher and Manley (and wife Norma) Lupher.

Surviving is Manley’s widow and Mary’s good friend, Laura (Jean) Lupher. Mary was an aunt, great aunt, great great aunt and even a great great great aunt to many nephews and nieces. Calling hours will be Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville with a Daughters of the American Revolution service at 1:45 p.m.

The funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Mary’s nephew, Dr. Dennis Lupher and his wife Mary Ann, officiating. Burial will be in Cambridge Springs Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to Hatch Cemetery Association, c/o David Masters, 101 Chestnut Street, Edinboro, PA 16412, Cambridge Spring Cemetery Association, c/o Mrs. Bieganski, 12102 Dawn Drive, Meadville, PA 16335 or Hospice of Crawford County, 464 Pine Street, Meadville, PA 16335. Although Mary will be missed by her family, they celebrate her long and happy life.

George Hineman received word Monday that his brother-in-law, Edward Hunt, the young man who was fatally injured on the  Lake Shore railroad at Youngstown, O., Saturday night, died the following morning and that the remains would be brought to Black Ash Monday for burial. The deceased also has a cousin here in town, Mrs. William Kohmand {I think it is actually HOHMANN) hard to read spelling of this name], who is deeply grieved over his untimely death.

A PLUM RESIDENT HAS PASSED AWAY

Crawford Billig Died at Home Monday.

Crawford Billig, for 69 years a resident of Plum township and widely known and generally respected, died at the family home at Diamond yesterday, following an illness of organic heart disease.

The decedent who was born in Mercer county 70 years ago, with his parents came to Plum township and nearly all his life was passed in the locality where he passed away. He was a veteran of the Civil war and served for eighteen months with Company I, Fourth Pennsylvania volunteers.

He is survived by his widow and one son, Ralph Billig, both residents of Diamond, route 2, R.F.D.

Funeral services will be conducted at the residence at 1:30 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Herman Armstrong of Corry officiating. The burial will be at the Chapmanville cemetery.

Friends are kindly asked to omit sending flowers.

Mr. Hindeman was 75 years old and had been sick for six weeks. Merton Hindman, aged 36 years, a farmer of Plum township, fell twenty-one feet from a barn where he was working two miles north of Copperstown Friday, sustaining injuries that are expected to prove fatal. His skull was crushed. He is married and has a family.

John Merton Hindeman, aged 38, died at the home of Lemuel Keeley near his home Sunday morning. On Friday morning Mr. Hindeman started for his work, very happy. He was a carpenter and expected to complete a barn he was working on that day. He had just climbed up in the barn on one of the beams and got nicely to work when he fell backward and down twenty-five feet, striking the back of his head, breaking the bones, on a stone wall. He did not regain consciousness and died Sunday morning at 10 o’clock at the Baptist church at Bradleytown. Interment in the Plum Valley cemetery. The deceased was loved by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his great loss a wife, a father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. James Hindeman, two brothers, George Hindeman of near Guy’s Mills and William Hindeman of Union City, and two sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Brown* of Titusville and Mrs. Hattie Billig of Diamond.

The closest Brown’s I have found are living next door to Joseph W. Hineman, Lizzie’s uncle. On the 1910 census, here is a Henry Brown and a Willis Brown, one married to an Effie A., and the other an Ellen A., but both couples have been married more than a few years.

I am posting this information regarding Alexander Hindman/Hineman to show his connection to John and Mary (McConnell) Hineman, who were his parents.

Once again, I have cropped the image in pieces to make it easy to see the important information.

West Virginia Birth Record 1871 - Hancock Co.

This is indexed as Eldis McC  Hindman, but if you compare the last letter of his first name to other “s” on the same document, you can tell it is not an “s”. I think it is an “e” for Eddie, even though it does look different from the “e” at the end of Myrtle. In addition, Nancy too a look at it too, and noticed the “M” in McC looks like a “W” until you compare it to other ones on the page, plus it does look like the “M” in Myrtle.

I have checked the WV vitals, but I can’t seem to pull up marriage records for anyone in 1856, so they must not have them on there yet.

She was born on July 20, 1874, in Bradleytown, and lived most of her life in that community.

Her children preceded her in death. Surviving are five grandchildren, James Smith, New Orleans; Dean Smith, Erie; Richard Smith, California; Twila Smith, Meadville, and Mrs. Marilyn Mehaelose?, Townville.

Removal was made in the Williams Funeral Home, Chapmanville.

For 1870, I couldn’t find her father, Robert Jennings, so I searched for Merton, who was old enough to show up on the census record.

And look who  he is living with!

John and Mary (McConnell) Hineman

And who is missing? Their daughter, Elizabeth, who was old enough to be married.

So…I am thinking that she was married to Robert Jennings and probably died in childbirth. Why else would this seemingly unrelated baby be living in this house?

UPDAATE: THIS IS NOT THE CORRECT SYLVIA! Based on new information, it appears Sylvia married M.A. Stull, whose first name appears to be Marshall. They were living in Florida.

Now for some serious speculating.

Sylvia McClelland, daughter of Jeremiah and Agnes (Hineman) McClelland is living at home until at least 1900, and was in her 30’s at that time. Since the 1910 census states that 4 of Agnes‘ children are still living,  Sylvia must have finally married someone.

This is took quite a bit of searching, but I think it’s a real possibility this is her. Erie County, PA is not far from Venango County, PA. See what you think:

JACOB HINDMAN  [HINEMAN]

Jacob Hindman, aged about 73 years, one of the most prominent farmers in the vicinity of Big Run, died Saturday morning at 1 o’clock of diabetes after an illness of several months. The deceased located on a farm near Big Run in 1891 and had resided there since that time. He was a member of the Big Run Presbyterian church and active in his support of the church work. He is survived by his wife and five children — Joseph, of Big Run; Mrs. Alice Stiver, of this county, Mrs. J.S. Gray and John Hindman of Punxsutawney, and Earl, at home; also, two sisters and one brother. The funeral services were held yesterday morning, at 10 o’clock, in the Presbyterian church at Big Run by Rev. Morrison.

RECENT DEATHS
David Stiver.

David Stiver, one of the old and well known residents of Banks township, died Tuesday morning at 7 o’clock, of pneumonia aged 78 years. Mrs. Stiver preceded him to the grave three months ago. The deceased was a veteran of the Civil war, being a member of Co. K, 206th regiment, and was held in high esteem as a neighbor and citizen. Ten children survive him namely: George, of Big Run; Mrs. John Vanscice, of DuBois; Mrs. Thos. Weaver, of Rossiter; Mrs. John Henry of Rochester Mills; Wm. H. Stiver, of Berwindale; Samuel Stiver, of Berwindale; Mrs. George Pierce, of Rossiter; Charles, of Banks township; Clarence, of Rossiter, and Mrs. H.H. Ray, of Bowersville. Funeral services will be held at Pine church this morning.

George Stiver, aged 69 years, of Gaskill township, Jefferson county, who died on Thursday in the Punxsutawney hospital, following an illness of three months, was a native of Indiana county, having been born and reared in Canoe township. the deceased, who was a son of David and Elizabeth Stiver, located in Gaskill township shortly after his marriage in 1886 to Miss Martha J. Wainwright. He leaves his widow and these children: Mrs. Fred Heitzenrater, of Punxsutawney; James L. Stiver, of Big Run, and Warren and Thelma Stiver, at home. He also leaved these brothers and sisters: Mrs. Joseph McKee, Mrs. Annie Weaver and Clarence Stiver, of near Rossiter; Mrs. John Henry, of Rochester Mills; Mrs. W.H. Henry, of LaJose; Mrs. Harvey Day, of Punxsutawney, and S.R. and Charles Stiver, of Canoe township. The funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at the home and interment followed in the Pleasant Grove cemetery.

Clarence Stiver’s sister:

GRACE PEARCE, 97, Rossiter RD 1, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 1975 in the Adrian Hospital in Punxsutawney.

Born May 22, 1877, in Banks Twp., Indiana County, she was the daughter of David and Elizabeth Bradenbaugh Stiver.

She lived her entire life in the Rossiter area and was a member of Steffy Chapel United Methodist Church and the Ladies Aid of that church.

Surviving are six children:
Mrs. Fred (Lula) Means, Valier; Alvie Pearce, Gifford, Pa.; Mrs. William (Mildred) Digel, Cyclone, Pa.; Mrs. Clay (Gladys) Smith, Indiana RD 2; Mrs. Howard (Marguerite) Smith, Glen Campbell RD 1; and Norman Pearce, Rossiter RD 1; 19 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; on brother, Clarence Stiver.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George C. Pearce whom she married in 1896 and who died in 1946; and one son, Guy Pearce.

Friends will be received from 7-9 p.m. today and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Schenkemeyer Funeral Home in Punxsutawney where services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Marshall Armour will officiate and interment will be in the Dever Cemetery.
